Fed on Nadal losing in the fourth round:
"That's something. I know. I've done it in Wimbledon and US Open. He tried to achieve it here, and it shows it's not easy to achieve. Of course, I was disappointed for him, but Ialso knew that it was a big opportunity for me"

I have a lot of admiration for RF and his achievements, but this is smugness overload!

He's admitting his own faults and showing empathy with another player?? It was disappointing for Nadal, but also an amazing opportunity for Fed - obviously he's not going to deny that?

I'm the first to point out Federer's arrogance but those particular comments were in fact the opposite of arrogant, it was basically Federer admitting that the only reason he had an opportunity to win the French Open was because Nadal was not there.

Goodness me, Fed has plenty to be smug about but I don't believe that he is. By definition all top players have to have enormous self belief which can easily come across as smugness or arrogance but, again, I don't personally feel that this applies to Fed. However well he speaks English, it is still is a foreign language for him and this may cause some commentators put an unfair spin on the words and phrases he uses. The same has happened to some of Rafa's comments about Andy.

No, Fed has often come out with utterly arrogant and smug comments that cannot have been twisted by the press but the particular example above is not one, that's all.

Mark - you wanted an example of your refusal to accept other views and just sweeping them aside? There you go - that's it. Wink

You must be because it makes no sense and you used the wink...

But if you are actually serious, please realise that both yours and my posts are no different, we both disagreed with sweet_jane but I simply started the post with "no" which just clarifies that I disagree, nothing else. I accept her views because Federer is arrogant and therefore it's easier to assume what he is saying is arrogant however just like you, I disagreed with her interpretation of the quote.

So go ahead and label my post as a "refusal to accept other views and sweep them aside" but make sure you do it for yourself as well then.

Very amusing, all is true. No matter how great he is, and I don't think we can deny he is, nobody likes continuity and it is time tennis progresses and a new era of champions starts winnning slams. Enter andy! Smile

roflmao roflmao An Open Letter As Dictated By Roger Federer To Bleacher Report (Humor)
by Robert Orzechowski -   Written on August 10, 2009

Hello All My Fans and Everyone Else,
Yeah, I mean I just wanted to write this brief letter, you know...to kind of respond to all the feedback out there with Rafa and all, you know...
I mean, I won Wimbledon and the French Open and Rafa didn't, you know...He is still a great competitor, you know and I look forward to battling with him some more, you know and Andy Murray is improving and so is Andy Roddick who right now is, you know, playing unbelievable.
I mean, don't worry Andy, you are you know, going to come back next year and win it if I don't make at least the semi-finals so I am sure you are going to do well...you know?
I mean all these younger players are going to come at me you know and I am just going to do my best, I mean to beat them and defend my title, you know.

Sure I mean these guys are all dangerous and can get at you if you are not with your game, you know.
You know, I have been through some hard times, you know.  Wimbledon 2008 was difficult for me and Rafa grabbed the crown at the very last minute due to darkness, you know.  I mean. That was difficult.
So Andy I know how it feels to lose, you know?  I know how it feels to let the tears all out when you are trying to hold it in you know.
I don't know what is going to happen for the US Open, you know, but I feel that I have a great chance to reclaim the glory, you know.  I mean it is astounding to think that I could take home a sixth US Open and consecutively, you know.
I mean, I don't know what else I can happen , right ?

Well that is about all you know.  I mean, I have nothing else to say and if I did you wouldn't know what I was talking about, you know so let's leave it at that.
Sincerely

Roger Federer .

Editor's Note:  Yeah, I mean, we know Roger, you know?

And speaking of Roger’s fashion-forward choices, here’s the definitive answer on The Dreaded “15″ Jacket:

“I actually didn’t have the jacket with me. I didn’t even know Nike did one. I won and a guy walks out and says ‘look, if you want to wear this jacket, it’s got a 15 on it.’ I was like ‘that’s kind of cool.’ So I look at the jacket and I can’t find it, it’s so small. Then I look and it’s on the back at the side. If it would have been a huge 15 on the back like in Paris, I wouldn’t have worn it for the trophy ceremony.
“It would never have occurred to people that I wore it except that [BBC interviewer] Sue Barker asked me about it on Centre Court. She made a big deal out of it and I think that’s why people then thought it was classless or and a bit arrogant, especially towards Andy [Roddick]. But it’s got nothing to do with that. I was just very proud to have won the tournament.”
