Is Federer the GOAT?

Quote

Used to follow swimming really closely, not so much these days but I know there are wave-reduction technologies in use, not sure when they were first introduced though. They were also trying to ban a new Speedo LZT racer swimsuit because something like 3 world records were made in it when it first came out. I think it costs £500, basically squeezing the body in to become more streamline so obviously you go faster.

I don't really think there is a GOAT - Sampras probably stands out to me, 14 slams in a highly competitive era. Laver won at all four Slams but tennis wasn't as competitive back then, he won some of his titles as an amateur.

If Borg didn't retire at 26, I think he would have been considered by most people, the GOAT.

Can Federer stake his claim? I think he'd need to win 15 slams. In terms of tennis, I think from 2005-2007, he played some of the best tennis EVER seen.

I really think we have to let the evidence speak for itself!

How can you say that?  I don't think you where watching that much tennis in the 80s and 90s.

Do I have to be alive to see matches from that era?

How many matches have you watched from the 80s?

I've watched plenty of Slam finals that I can find on Youtube, maybe about 20-25? The tennis is nowhere near the level that Federer was at in his prime. Whether that's down to advancements in racquet technology or not, is another matter.

As you're trying to allude to, it's in the eye of the beholder, some people may like Edberg's S&V, or Lendl's mechanical groundstrokes, I personally think Federer's game in those years was the most complete we may ever see.

What's your opinion then?

I am so glad the era of S&V is over yay
