Nadal hasn't played for so long now, I wonder how much of his fitness will have gone by February. It's a weird start to the season, all the injuries, rusty players, seeded players being beaten by non seeds. Stepanek got to the semis in one tournament and then went out in the first round in his second tournament. Federer out in the first round, who would have thought that would happen. I think at the moment anybody has a chance of winning there are no certainties and hopefully Andy can take advantage of that in the AO.

Absolutely. Sometime, real soon, the ATP are going to have to change their schedule. It's too much to expect players to cope with so many hard court tournaments. It's very wearing on the body.
I'm really gutted Rafa is out of the AO.

But what about...

Rafa's rehabilitation from his left foot injury continues to progress, and he plans to return to competition a bit earlier than planned.
On February 4, 2006, he will play an exhibition match against French tennis player Fabrice Santoro, at the Petits As jounior event in Tarbes, France. Rafa is familiar with the event, which he won as a junior in 2000.
This will give Rafa a bit of match practice before he returns to tournament play in Marseille on February 13. That will be his first tournament since winning Madrid last October. The Spanish Davis Cup Captain, Emilio Sanchez, is considering him for the first-round Davis Cup tie, beginning February 10, but acknowledges Rafa may not be ready by then.

Maybe he's just decided not to risk playing Davis Cup, and saving his energy or whatever for other tournaments?

he really adds a bit more excitment and a hope of getting to the top instead of federer... again!!
it's not looking that great though... but there has been some news that he has
finally
passed his driving test. so he can drive that loooovely mercedes that he won.
bit of pointless info there for you guys.
