Ferrer's out of Shanghai too which is a shame as he was defending finalist points. Surprised Novak lost a set to Berrer - Novak's definitely not as good on tiebreaks as he was last year, the opposite situation to Andy in fact.

He's not going to like that fact that Berdych was picked over him! I wonder if the real reason for his absence is that he was asking for too much money? Good lineup though - interesting that Andy has opted to play this again after skipping the last two years.

Like the fact that smugfed left out.
A short report in Independent today that AO is increasing its prize money to avert threat of boycott. So sounds like the player pressure is working.

In Beijing: Gasquet having to work hard v Ze Zhang (age 22, WR165, this year 1W/4L). Serving at 3-4 in 3rd set.
Gasquet is only one of three (with Djoko and Tsonga) top 20 players left in the tournament -next is Seppi at 25, and they haven't even finished the 2nd round.
.....and now Gasquet gone too. ZZ won 6-4 3-6 6-4

It's really weird. Tsonga didn't even have to play 2nd round as Davydenko pulled out. Organisers must be hoping that Djoko and Tsonga make it through to the final! Winner gets $530,670 , while Tokyo winner gets $308,130

Raises even more questions about the decision to livestream Beijing but not Tokyo. I wonder why Tokyo has 2nd class status to Beijing?

There is a 1,000 WTA tournament going on in Beijing at the same time, so maybe there are more people around for broadcasting coverage. Also I think Nadal was due to play Beijing this year.

I expect Gasquet might be a little bit fatigued physically or maybe mentally given his fairly fragile mental state, after winning last week. He's not had much time for a breather (I think he's had one day off) and while the top guys can cope due to their superhuman fitness, the other guys probably struggle a bit more.
