He's going to find it awfully difficult to get back to anything like his form. He was always a confidence player.
Didn't Ancic also have an equally disabilitating illness and is now doing a law degree in New York?
A sounder choice I feel. Sod must be 28 by now anyway?

Yes and I think Ancic had glandular fever too.  I seem to remember he tried to come back but to no avail.

Article in yesterday's evening standard - James Ward also had glandular fever 4 years ago and had to take 5 months off. Seems to be a lot of it about in the tennis world.

I think it probably reflects how they push their bodies when young and often they don't realise they've got it at first, as they just think they're tired, aching etc.  Wasn't there a scare that Andy had it a few years ago around this time of year but it just turned out to be a virus he'd picked up as run down?

Too much air travel, staying in hotels, pushing body to the limit etc

Yes we tend to forget they are human beings and not machines.

Murray vs Cilic and Dodig I presume.

That's their top two. Cilic won his two matches v Italy, Dodig lost his. They also played the doubles and lost

I'm pleased GB didn't draw Spain - that would've been so tough! Croatia seems a winnable tie provided Andy plays. There's very little turnaround time from the US Open though - if Andy plays the final again (and hopefully he will!), it'll be on a Monday and then the Davis Cup starts on the Friday. I wouldn't be surprised if Croatia choose clay as well, so there'll be the added difficulty of adapting to a new surface.

Don't underestimate Veic either, solid player. Beat Ward earlier this year. Wouldn't surprise me if they take a bit of a gamble and play him over Dodig for one tie, as Cilic/Dodig usually play all three days.

I dunno. Will be interesting to see how we do without the home support.

Hinges heavily on Murray though, and as this is a mere 4 days after the US Open final, if he goes deep there again he might well be knackered - physically or emotionally - by the DC.

Croatian journalist Gordan Gabrovec tells me they have only ever played one home tie outdoors, 17 years ago vs. Australia. Lost 1-4.

Usually favour Hard courts I believe.

Thanks for the info - that should make it easier to adapt to the conditions for the GB players.
