He came to my tennis clubs open day to play an exhibition against Chris Wilkinson and everyone had a chance to talk to him etc. He was a complete prat becuase he thought he was some kind of celebrity and everything he said made me cringe.

Agree with ljsmall-Barry is worth listening to as he can be hilarious (unitentionally i think!). My favourite so far was just last week when Barry agreeing (yet again!) with Petchy said

"yes Petchy not only is Andy unique but no-one else plays quite like him"  Classic Coleman B**ls

Sam Smith is my fav. Jo durie my least fav-just count how many times she agrees with her co-commentator-come on girl be controversial. Have liked Judy Murray's input  on the rare occassions she has been used on Eurosport-insightful, brief not constantly talking about last nights meal/lift conversation/the last time I met such and such a player...

I am watching the Luby, Nalbandian match and Barry is coming out with some classics. My fave is him telling Luby that he is stupid for hitting the ball a certain way- this from a guy who never made it into the top 200 and never coached a top player.

Peter Flemming and Petch are by far the best! I HATE Barry Cowan with a passion. He always looks like he knows what he's talking about but if you listen to him on a regular basis he changes his standpoint all the time. He actually praised Murray for his consistancy and serve at one point during the US Open series. He just says what he thinks people want to hear and agrees with whoever's in the studio. He gets predictions wrong consistantly. And he irritates me. That voice... I'm seriously considering tomatoes for Aberdeen!

If  I hadn't been off line for a couple of weeks, I'd think you were mind-reading.

That's sums up exactly how I feel yes

Worst are Frew McMillan and easily the winner of crap commentating is Andrew Castle!

Do you need any dosh to buy more tomatoes? :p I'd chip in!!

As we've got a few weeks without tennis I thought it might be fun to start a thread about tennis commentators [after all where would we be without them?].  I can't see one in the list of back-threads.
So some questions to get us started:
What do you think makes a good/bad commentator?
Who are your favourite/least favourite commentators?

For me a good commentator provides real insights into the game.  S/he has personality and is witty.  Who fits that person specification?  John McEnroe.   I think he's transformed Wimbledon commentary and all the British commentators pale into insignificance next to him.  I also like Peter Fleming for his dry sense of humour and Pat Cash for his liveliness.

I dislike commentators who keep telling us the bleeding obvious.  And I get really irritated when commentators on Andy's matches treat the match as in the bag long before the end given we all know anything can happen in tennis.  And I can't help sometimes wondering about how ex-2nd rate players can be so critical of 1st-rate players but then I know it's their job.

Mod NoticeMerged threads.

Yes, thanks Mark. Hadn't noticed this one.  But Daisy can't believe there's nothing more to say and there are quite a few of us on MW now who weren't on it in 2006.

Pat Cash is an absolute moron. The disparity in knowledge between him and Petchey at the WTF was frightening.
