Gulbis is the tennis version of bipolar.

Uh-oh. 4-5 down, Golding 30-0 up, double faults, then has his next ace over-ruled by an Andreev challenge. Now in trouble...

But responds brilliantly with two aces.

5-5.

I worry that if Andreev takes this set the momentum will completely shift, such is the way when a significantly lower ranked player is in the lead. Olly needs this set to keep the momentum going.

Love game for Andreev and he leads 6-5. Certainly playing a lot better than the first set now.

I quite agree. Still holding his own in the 2nd though. Am kinda shocked here. lol

Isner gets the 2nd 6-3 in the meantime. That was pretty quick.

Yep, apart from maybe Venus' defeat. Federer winning 6-1, 6-1, 3-0. Neutral Ramos beat Cilic last year and has been in great form on the clay, seems to be one of those guys who steps on court against the top guys having already lost the match.

Ramos had played only 3 grass matches - total! - since turning pro in 2007 before today's match, so i wouldn't read too much into that result.

Ah right, fair enough. Still, a shame to see him roll over like that.

Golding just not getting anywhere on the Andreev serve anymore. Likewise Andreev though, Golding serving very well. For now...

I wonder what his fitness is like.

Golding holds to love and leads 4-3, on serve. Hasn't been a break of serve since the 6th game of the 1st set.

And Gulbis wins the 2nd too in the same fashion. I think the Mayans were right.  2012 is it! w00t

Well done Gulbis - love to see him post a win over Berdych.  A pity he's about the only big hitter on the Fed/Djoko side of the draw though.

I still think Berdych will win.

Meanwhile Golding and Andreev share love games and we're at 5-5. Olly really is serving brilliantly. Hope I haven't cursed him now by saying that. Andreev likewise though, he's been getting better as the match has gone on.

Come on Olly!

Andreev gets a return winner to stop the rot of 13 successive points on the Golding serve. Golding wins the next point however and leads 6-5.

Goes to another tie-break then.

Golding has been magnificent on his serve - hasn't been broken since the first service game. Unfortunately since the first set he hasn't been able to do enough on return and it's now been 25 successive games without a break of serve.

This tie-break will be huge. Surely can't see Olly coming back to win in 5. Experience will probably play a big part for Andreev.

Argh, mis-hit from Andreev catches the corner of the baseline and it's back on serve in the TB. Golding has had no luck whatsoever today.

You're taking the piss! Andreev gets a racquet on a put-away volley from Golding and it somehow sneaks in. Yet another challenge has gone against Olly. FFS. Should be 4-2 up, instead it's 3-3.

Olly double-faults on set point.  doh

This so frustrating to watch.

Andreev takes it 9-7. Frown Gutting, gutting. Everything went against him, no luck at all, missed a simple volley, had set-point but threw it away.

Ultimately though, his serve went missing when it mattered most - 5-3 up (with the mini-break), 6-5 up (set point), 7-8 down (facing set point).

And that is the difference between winning 6-1, 7-6, 7-6 and going down 6-1, 6-7, 6-7. Such a fine, fine line.

Just like with England I promised myself I wouldn't get frustrated, just like with English he goes so much closer than I thought he would, to the point that I start to actually believe, and then I do get frustrated.  Rolling Eyes

Saw the last two games of Berdych/Gulbis. Gulbis had the match in his hand when he hit a shot long. what a bummer I was thinking but then I felt a bit sorry for Berdych too. Gulbis looks extremely determined.

Then saw Isner going out to Falla. Just the last point. I guess it’s better this way.

And Gulbis wins in three tight TBs. 1st major upset of the tournament. Many more to come?

MH, you were very wrong on this. What do you have to say for yourself? :p

Wow Golding holds after a mammoth game, saving five BPs (all with huge serves). Showed plenty of steel there. 3-3 in the 4th.

Elsewhere Berdych is out! 1st round defeat to Gulbis, 6-7, 6-7, 6-7. Well done Gulbis!
