Wimbledon 2012 - The Other Players
« on: June 18, 2012, 04:05 PM »
With Qualifying getting underway today now seemed an appropriate time to start this.
James Ward, Jamie Baker, Oliver Golding, Josh Goodall all have Wildcards into the main draw, along with four foreign players (Haas, Hewitt, Goffin and Zemlja).
Liam Broady, George Morgan, Kyle Edmund, Luke Bambridge, Richards Bloomfield, Edward Corrie, David Rice, Chris Eaton and Andrew Fitzpatrick are the Brits all involved in Qualifying (notable names missing are Dan Cox (injured), Alex Ward (recovering from surgery) and Dan Evans (only just returned from injury).
Unfortunately Morgan, Bloomfield, Corrie, Rice and Fitzpatrick have all already been knocked out in QR1, with only Rice taking a set. Eaton and the three Juniors (Broady, Edmund and Bambridge) are yet to play.

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

Much speculation that Roddick won't be seeded. Federer-Roddick round one, anyone?

Forgot about the weird seeding lark.
He's ranked #33 so usually would be enough to get seeded as at least one higher ranked player is bound to pull out.
How did he do last year?

R2, 3? Nothing much of note. He's always had a dumb game. He hits a lights-out serve... and then defends.
EDIT: lost to Lopez in R3

R3 should be enough. I think he'll just squeeze a seed, especially if Tsonga ends up pulling out.
Chris Eaton is the first Brit to make it through QR1, beating highly-rated Aussie teenager (one of half-a-dozen!) Benjamin Mitchell in three sets.
On the subject of Aussie teenagers, they have some serious talented youngsters coming through: Bernard Tomic (19; #27), James Duckworth (20; #194), Ben Mitchell (19; #234), Matt Reid (21; #258) Jason Kubler (19; #320) and Luke Saville (18; junior #1, currently holds 3 of the 4 junior Slams).
Back on topic, Liam Broady's match is underway against Italian Thomas Fabbiano (ranked #24) and is in-fact an early break up (leads 2-0).
Broady is broken back serving for the first set.
5-4 there.
And Broady loses the first set 6-7 (5).
Apparently Andy is in attendance today to offer his support to the other Brits. Nice touch.

What a result for young Kyle. Only 17 and now beaten a guy just a couple of points outside the top 100. The same guy who took Murray to four sets last Wimbledon, let us not forget.

I think it's time for a Chris Eaton sub-forum.

Gimeno-Traver took a set off Murray at Wimbly last year, great result!

Chris Eaton went out fighting to top seed Jurgen Zopp who won 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (8-6)
Kyle up 4-0 in 1st set against Marcel Felder!
...and takes 1st set a few minutes later. 6-0

Wow, stunning first set from Edmund.
Just lost the 2nd set on a tie-break though.
Into the third set now.
Edmund goes down 2-6 in the 3rd.

Not surprising really since he's not played the last few tournaments because of it, was kind of expecting him not to play
