Murray beats Malisse to end malaise
By Andrew Hunter on August 11, 2010, 10:06 PM

The Scot has recently faced questions over poor form, and also the controversial decision to fire Miles MacLagan and there was a palpable sense of relief that Murray could finally answer his critics on the tennis court.
All this scrutiny did seem to be hindering Murray initially, as he lost serve early in the first set and recovered just in time as Malisse was serving for the first set. The Belgian has been enjoying a renaissance season in 2010, and he was demonstrating this quite capably, with some vicious inside out forehands, and a tremendous forehand up the line being the highlight shots from the racquet of the 30 year old.
The recovery break seemed to calm Murray greatly. With the momentum changing almost instantly, Malisse's red hot forehand finally started to produce errors, and Murray was there to pick up the pieces and complete a remarkable turnaround.
It was starting to become evident that Malisse's blistering shotmaking in the early stages of the match was, with all due respect, flash in the pan, and as the Belgian struggled to reproduce the form he had shown, Murray was growing in confidence. The world number four is defending champion and is expected to show swagger and verve. As the match wore on, Murray's shotmaking became more ambitious and ultimately, successful. Dropshots, volleys, lobs and unlikely passing shots were all on display this evening, and Murray seemed pleased and somewhat relieved to get the win under his belt.
Up next in round three is the enigmatic and athletic Frenchman, Gael Monfils.

^ Agree. Thanks Andew From what I managed to see of the first set (live-stream permitting), I was't optimistic, but second was a pleasure to watch, apart from Andy taking 3 attempts to close out the match. Maybe in first outing without a coach, he was a bit nervous.
Thursday - Andy 3rd on court again after Nalbandian/Soderling and Federer/Llodra.
Andy's thoughts on the Monfils match [BBC Sport] -
Murray has met third-round opponent Monfils three times before, winning twice.
"It will be a fun match against Monfils," said Murray, who won their last encounter on hard courts in Madrid in 2008.
"He is so fast, can jump incredibly high and reaches most balls, it's going to be difficult.
"I'm going to have to try and use some slice and angles to get him moving."

You're going to have to search through the Ms in the dictionary again after the next match! Nice positive report. I thought Andy started really well but then lost it rather. In the end though some of his shots reminded me just why I became such a huge fan in the first place -especially that passing shot on the run when he broke Malisse. Keep it up Andy!

Brilliant post match right up of a really good match from Andy, ok he started slowly, got behind, but unlike other times, he did not succumb to the pressure, relaxing and thus showing all why he is Number four in the world. He seems to be getting better and better with each match - like he says "i want to be in the best possible shape for the start of the US Open" - i for one see him peaking for this Grandslam nicely. Its amazing what a little bit of confidence can do. Most if not all of his shot making in the second set was a dream to watch. The match against Monfils will be very interesting as inately they (Andy and monfils) are both natural counter punches. It should prove for a rather unique spectacle, i predict, the one who steps outta his comfort zone more and is the aggressor will win. reading his own post match interview, he was able to be really objective, realising that to beat Monfils he'll need to Play even better tennis. This is one reason why i love this guy, he always strives to be the best he can be, no matter if he puts in a good performance, he wants to up his level to greater heights. Good luck Andy for today and again well done. Its moments like this when we ALL realise why we support you.
