Murray bounces Nadal out
By Phil Messenger on August 14, 2010, 10:29 PM

After a highly impressive performance against David Nalbandian yesterday, a re-match against Nadal promised to be the pick of the semi-finals. Before the match Nadal lead the head to head eight games to three and the Spaniard wone the pairs most recent meeting in the semi finals at Wimbledon.
Murary is often rightfully criticised for playing a relatively passive counter punching game, but this tactic doesn't work against Nadal. The Spaniard is an excellent defender and has almost unbounded stamina so to stand a chance of winning Murray has to play the part of the aggressor.
Despite opening with a double fault, Murray signalled his intent from the outset, a combination of rifled cross court backhands and inside-out forehands keeping the Spaniard off balance. Nadal doesn't move as well on hard courts as he does on clay and in yesterdays quarter final Phillipp Kohlschreiber used the tactic of hitting behind Nadal to great success. Murray repeated this trick to great effect, often leaving Nadal floundering behind the baseline.
Both players served poorly for large stretches of the match, so it wasn't surprising when Murray earned a first break point in the fourth game. Nadal scraped through with some trademark penetrating groundstrokes, but this seemed like merely a postponement of the inevitable. The Scot had to defend break points of his own in the seventh game, saving them with a brave, line kissing forehand and a deep dipping slice.
The crucial break came in the next game. Nadal looked in control at 30-0 before Murray thrashed several huge forehands to draw level and then break clear after a prolonged baseline exchange.
Serving for the set, Murray showed no signs of nerves as he smashed down three aces to earn three set points. A double fault on the first was quickly forgotten when the Scot arrowed another massive forehand winner into the corner.
Murray continued to pressurise Nadal in the second set and when he broke in the third game it looked like the match would run away from the Spaniard. Nadal isn't the world number one for no reason though, and he showed some of his famous resilience to weather the Murray storm before breaking back at 3-2 and then holding easily.
After losing three games in a row, it was now the Scot who looked besieged. Nadal was beginning to get into a rhytm on the return and some tentative second serves were punished to bring up two more break points. This seemed to kick Murray into a higher gear and the danger was quickly averted with some more aggressive shot-making. The Scot carried this into the next Nadal service game, bringing up three break points with a series of lethal cross-court backhands. Nadal saved the first two before punting a backhand into the net.
Murray was now serving for the match and repeated the solidity seen at the tail end of the first set, serving out to 15.
This was a great result for Murray and is proof that he's refound something approaching his best form. The Scot will meet Djokovic or Federer in the final, where he will aim to become the first player to defend a Canadian Masters Shield since Andre Agassi in 1995.
A great result with lots of good play .... however, I think Nadal was not at the very top end of his game and will have to improve if he is going to justify the betting odds that have been floating around for him to win the US Open. If Murray continues to play like this, he is a real serious contender for the title at Flushing Meadows ....

Nice report Phil. Thanks. It wasn't Nadal at his best but that doesn't detract from Andy's performance. I liked the way he kept pulling Nadal from side to side instead of hitting shots down the middle of the court which Rafa would kill. Have to admit my heart was in my mouth when Rafa pulled himself back in the second but Andy showed what he can do by keeping his cool and his focus.
Have to say, I wonder what his ex-coach, and Corretja, have been telling him over the past few months. Andy said yesterday that he's now having to be independent and take responsbility for his game. LA was a horror (perhaps not surprisingly in the circumstances) but it seems that an independent, thinking Andy is in the process of finding himself again - with, perhaps, a little help from Mum.

From the BBC Sport report -
From the ATP report -
Interesting Andy says he enjoys playing aggressively - so where's that been hiding all these months?
Now we know its Federer in the final, just hope Andy has put the AO behind him and does enjoy, and even better, wins this match.
Match starts 6.30 pm BST
Since arriving in North America, Murray has dispensed with the services of coach Miles Maclagan and spent much of his time with the media outlining his plans for a replacement.
However, he has also suggested that he is enjoying the new-found freedom and the more aggressive tactics that so many people have called for have been apparent in Toronto.
"This is a surface I'm most comfortable on," said Murray. "I enjoy playing aggressive, especially against the best players.
"I want to enjoy playing my game and expressing myself out on court. You never expect to beat the other top players. The margins are so thin.
"I go on court knowing that I have to play my best if I'm going to have a chance of beating them. I like playing Rafa on a hardcourt."
From the ATP report -
"I had to play through the court against him," Murray said. "I'd watched some of his matches earlier in the week and when he was on the baseline he was dictating so much with his forehand. I was trying to play flat through the court when I got the chance and I was able to dictate a lot of points that way."
Commenting on the historic semi-final line-up [it's the first time in the tournament's history that the World's top four players have contested the semis], Murray said: "It's a great challenge to play against all of them and tomorrow will be another test. I love playing against all of them."

Andy is doing great - Mummy watching on. Haven't seen him playing this well for a couple of years. Nothing to lose. Live - very much like Agassi. Changes pace and then pounces. On his own terms, and very aggressive. Can't believe how some of his fans

Did you watch any of Andy's matches after the Australian Open, or the recent tournament in LA? If you did, surely you can understand some of the negativity on this site. Apart from Wimbledon, Andy in Toronto is chalk and cheese compared to how he was playing then.

I agree BigV, especially about the negativity, he can't even win without some saying it wasn't Nadal at his best. It brings me down to read the posts on here sometimes, can there not for once be only positive posts about a great win, without the "he only won 'cos the other player wasn't playing well" mentality, maybe the other player wasn't playing well because of how good Andy was. Jeez, give the guy a break.

I thought murray was again extremely poor on the forehand side, nothing like vs nalbandian. His serving too was poor (although I liked the way he served out the match) Nadal was even worse.

I disagree.
I watched the whole match and I was pleasantly surprised to see how solid Andy FH was. Andy was consistently hitting hard, relatively flat FH with a little spin for margin and driving the ball to Nadal BH and FH to gain the initiative. Quite a few times, Andy ran around the BH to hit the big FH cross court to move Nadal out of position. You need to watch the whole match to appreciate this.
This is a much more accomplished/solid/consistent performance FH wise from Andy. It was controlled power and agression. Andy was willing to take the ball on to gain the initiative in each point and not let Nadal dictate the match. A satisfying & polished performance.

Delighted with the result, both players did well but I am tremendously happy to see Andy playing so well and come out on top.
