Murray through as Benneteau retires

By for on
Andy Murray advanced to the fourth round of the Monte Carlo Masters event after his opponent injured his ankle and wrist in a fall.

The scores were level at 5-5 in the first set when Benneteau came to an abrupt stop half way through a slide and from the Frenchman's reaction it was clear that something was seriously wrong.

The Murray on show today was markedly different from Tuesdays razor sharp vanquisher of Troicki. The Scot seemed ponderous in his movements and offered up a plethora of unforced errors on both wings. Benneteau by comparison was dictating play with a combination of timely forehand winners and delicate drop shots.

Next up is either Berdych or Nishikori.
Berdych it is.

Just to be exact, the fall occurred on the 5-all, 30-0 point to Andy. And maybe it'd be worth mentioning  that the scoreline was 6-5 to Andy, when Benneteau had to retire.

Also, is he not through to the 'Quarterfinal' as opposed to the'fourth round'?

So Andy would probably have won the match, but it really is disappointing how he can change from being a player at the top of his game one day to being the sluggish, sloppy one we saw today.  At one point the comm I was listening to said there wasn't much difference between the world No.4 and the world No.31 - and he wasn't being disrespectful to Benneteau who was a pleasure to watch.  Feel really gutted for him and Andy was clearly upset by the incident, caring person that he is.

Andy will definitely need to find Tuesday's form against Berdych.

I agree with Matchpoint. Can any one say why this happens. Andy often points to poor preparation, flying in too later and the like if he makes an early exit, but none of this seems to wash when he's played so well just before.

Why does it happen - any suggestions?

I can't believe Benneteau even tried to carry on. He was practically in tears when he went over! Poor chap. Murray never really got going but he was competing well enough. Berdych will be tricky...

He didn't play particularly awful (like against Anderson or Garcia-Lopez) but he was just a bit inconsistent and quite passive. Benneteau was the one really dictating the rallies and hitting the winners. Personally I think Andy would have nicked the first set as he just seemed to be getting the edge when the incident happened. Then again, it's easy to say that in hindsight.

I think the main reason for the criticism is because of the high expectations he set after the Troicki match. Had that been a scrappy win as well then it would just be case of getting used to the new surface. But after such a dominant performance he then regressed today.

He will certainly have to improve if he wants to beat Berdych. Not feeling confident about that one after today, truth be told.

Andy played very well to begin with and broke to lead 2-0.  A long service game followed when Benneteau managed to break back and from then on Andy seemed to be out of sorts, berating himself for minor errors.  Having said that he played some fantastic shots and I, for one, never doubted that he would eventually win the match.  He even won one point when he hit 10 shots with a racquet with a broken string!  Seemingly the court was playing much slower than it had been, partly because it had just been watered and partly because it was very much colder today.  It was also the first match up and the stands were half empty so there was very little atmosphere.  Andy didn't serve well today and that put him on the back foot a bit.  I'm sure we'll see a different Andy against Berdych tomorrow.
