Murray pulls out of Madrid Masters

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Andy Murray has pulled out of next week's Madrid Masters with a back injury.

It is with regret that, on doctors' advice, I have to withdraw from the Madrid (event) with an injury.

I always love coming to Madrid so it is a big disappointment. I look forward to returning next year and wish everyone a great week of tennis.

The Scot has twice reached the quarter-finals in Madrid and made the third round in 2011. Murray is next expected to be in action at the Rome Masters, which begins on 12th May.

Oh no.   Hope it's more precautionary than serious injury and that he is back for Rome.  If not, that's goodbye to RG really and a whole lot of ranking points.

well  the draw has been done  Fed  and Djokovic are on the same side of the draw, while Nadal and Tsonga are on the other side...  Its a joke really that Tsonga is  number 4 seed   He might struggle and might lose in the early rounds   he hasn't been playing well .  that could have been Muzz  in Tsonga's place    ready to take on Nadal in the semi's   Frown

Well somebody has posted a pic on the Andy in Madrid thread which shows him walking off the blue stuff carrying his tennis bag, so he obviously was practising there.

However, according to the above  report it's stated: "Britain’s Andy Murray, the world number four, will miss the Mutua Madrid Open after suffering an unfortunate back injury".  That doesn't sound to me like it's an old or ongoing problem but something more recent.  Did he pick it up in Barcelona, training in the gym, practising on the (slippery?) blue clay, or something unrelated to tennis?  As usual lack of more explicit information means his fans will be left to speculate.

I could be proved wrong, but I feel, and hope, that this is a precautionary measure, given that Andy wasn't happy about playing on the blue clay anyway, so why aggravate a problem before Rome which could affect his appearance at RG?

Hmm not quite an all star turnout for Madrid then.

Simply didn't fancy the slippy blue stuff.

Seems like I will have to get out some of my 50 or so DVD's of Andy if I want to see him next week. How many matches has he actually played so far this year. We dont seem to have seen that much of him - or is that just my imagination?

Certainly looks like he could have tried it and found it wanting.  Maybe he did slip.  Maybe Lendl encouraged him to pull out.  Goodness knows.

If he really is injured, then it would be a courtesy to his fans to be less vague about it.  Sorry, but it makes me angry when he does this because it only gives rise to negative speculation.

EDIT: From a report on ESPN News -
The player from Scotland will miss out on the opportunity to play on the new blue clay at the Madrid Open. It's replacing the traditional red-clay surface at the event, but players have complained it's slippery and provides a different bounce.

Such a bummer Frown But Madrid is an unknown and Rome much better practise or RG, so like you all I really hope it's merely precautionary.
Aileen, that's a trifle speculative......

That thought came into my mind when I read the news. Maybe he started to get problems in Barca... we'll never know.
There's only one good thing and that is I'll get more jobs done in the house and garden. Will keep one eye on the Madrid tournament, just to see who is in or out.

Good to see Andy doing the right thing and resting up.   stretcher Very Sad   Get well soon flowers

Very sad but the best thing to do.  They must look after their bodies. I wonder if it was at Barcelona as at one point I thought 'oh no' as Andy did clutch his back a couple of times.  Rest and recuperate Andy.  Nothing is worth injuring yourself for. (bad english).  Looking forward to Rome.

Yes, I think somthing did happen in Barcelona rather tentative a few times reaching for a ball. Good thing he pulled out of Madrid because I believe it is a very slippery surface. a few players may tumble. He will be fine for Rome and RG.
