Murray third in BBC Sports Personality award

In a show that celebrated a golden year in British sport, Andy Murray finished a creditable third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Cyclist Bradley Wiggins, 32, who won the Tour de France as well as gold in the Olympic time trial, pipped heptathlete golden girl Jessica Ennis to the prestigious title.
Murray, who accepted his trophy from ex-boxer Lennox Lewis over videolink from his training base in Miami, was perhaps unlucky that his US Open and Olympic titles were overshadowed by other Olympic achievements.
Should he claim a slam title in 2013, a non-Olympic year, success in the BBC event will surely be much more likely.
Nice for Andy - I think many suspected Wiggins would win. In any case, Andy was right up there, and for good reason!

Congratulations to Wiggo, Jess, Andy and indeed them all. 
Watching it I thought what a fabulous year of sport we'd had and looks like being ended with a test victory in India, the first for years and years.
So glad Andy did so well in this special year too, shows that at last he's at last found his way into the hearts of the Great British Public. About time

According to the Daily Telegraph, of the 1.6 million votes cast Wiggins received 492,064 votes, finishing well clear of two other 2012 champions, runner-up Jessica Ennis, the heptathlon champion, on 372,765 and third-placed Andy Murray, the tennis gold medallist and US Open champion, who received 230,444.
That doesn't leave many votes split between the other 9, so Andy really did do quite well!!

Re. those voting figure RTs - Andy got more votes this year than Cav got when he won SPOTY in 2011 (and 12x what he himself got last year)
