Murray to open against Haase in Melbourne

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Those who recall their duel at the 2011 US Open might shudder a little at the thought of Andy Murray opening his account at next week’s Australian Open with a match against Robin Haase.

In a match of two halves, Murray came from two sets down and the very brink of defeat to beat the giant Dutchman 6-4 in the fifth.

If the Scot survives the encounter, potential opponents at the sharp end of the draw include Juan Martin del Potro in the last eight, Roger Federer in the semi-finals and Novak Djokovic in the final.

Murray’s probable route to the title:

R1 Haase
R2 Sousa/Smith
R3 Mayer/Stakhovsky
R4 Simon/Dolgopolov/Monfils
QF Del Potro/Cilic
SF Federer
F Djokovic

Murray has been twice a finalist in Melbourne and is desperate to go one better this year, having finally broken his grand-slam duck at last year’s US Open.

That is a seriously tough draw. if Andy pulls this out of the hat, it will really be somthing a bit special.

Seen tougher.  Remember USO approaching the last 16......
Raonic, Cilic, Federer or Berdych, Djoker...................bring it on

Think we'll find it opening up as well and worry not about Del Potro

It could be a lot worse I think.  He'll know he has to be on guard in 1st round.  My main worry is delpo and then if it's played under the roof because of heat, might not be such an advantage if he plays smugfed in SFs (though I gather smugfed has a tough draw for once, though not seen that yet)

That's a tough draw.
Not so bad really when other scenarios are considered. I think its reasonable, but there are tripwires as always.

I actually think this is quite a good draw all things considered. Not only will Haase give Murray a reasonable (but most likely not too troubling) test early on to get him up and running but he has also avoided all his bogey men such as Berdych (whom I know he beat a couple times last year to square up the H2H but I still never fully fancy this match up), Roanic and other such volatile big-hitters. Furthermore he doesn't meet Djoker til the final at which point it will be anybody's game, with the parachute payment of the points a final loss would give compared to a semi defeat. Murray has an excellent H2H with Del P and Simon to boot. Slight amendment to the draw though:

R1 Robin Haase
R2 Sousa/Smith
R3 Mayer/Dolgopolov -  This is actually Mayer/Starkhovsky
R4 Simon/Cilic -  This is Simon/Dolgopolov/Monfils
QF Del Potro - Or Cilic
SF Federer
F Djokovic

Not exactly...they see the most capable person or the higher seed...but I gotta feeling that Tsonga will finish off Fed in the quarters Wink

If Andy happens to fall in his quest I have faith that Djokovic or Delpo will deal with olderer.

It looks tough but in reality it's not as tough as it looks. Haase is in abysmal form. Granted, he may raise his level once again, but there's no reason for Andy to not take him seriously this time. Though Andy is a slow starter and he might fall behind once again, but I'd still pick him to win in 4 if not 3.

No need to talk about the next 2 rounds. Simon is never a problem for Andy. Neither is Dolgo. Monfils has just seen a terrible loss to Ferrer and maybe overplaying it already. He's not in good shape or form either. I don't see him make it that far in fact. So it's going to be most likely Simon in the 4th round.

Both Delpo and Cilic are tough opponents but not real genuine threat to Andy. For a set and half, yes but it shouldn't go beyond that. Having said that, Delpo is probably most likely to make the qtr but Cilic, on the other hand, has done well here at the AO.

Now Federer may not even make the semi but if he does, he will have to beat Tomic, Raonic and Tsonga. Tomic, I don’t think, is a big problem for any of the top players at the moment, but he might be interested in putting up a good show for the Aussies. Raonic should stay relatively fresh. Tsonga is not in form lately plus he has some sort of injury going on. Still, by the time, Federer makes the semi; he should be tired unless he gets favorable schedules and keeps his matches short.

The final would be very tough however if Nole makes it too but that’s something we should not worry about right now. Though I must say the conditions are most likely to favour Andy than Nole should that happen. Andy will have to keep each of his matches as short as possible - something both Federer and Nole will be very keen on doing, so Andy will have to be very mindful of that as well. I can’t emphasize on this enough.

Where has this tough draw nonsense come from? Is it all based on one match 18 months ago?

Haase has won just twice in six months. One of those was against a guy outside the top 200.

Murray on the other hand has progressed significantly since 2011.

Unless Murray is playing particularly poor, he should have no problems whatsoever in the first two rounds. R3 and R4 opponents are obviously more dangerous but in all reality it should be a straightforward (and to be honest in Melbourne, it normally is quite straightforward) run to the Quarters.

It says 'probable route to the final'.

Of course there will be the odd lower ranked players who provides and upset or two but in all reality more of those names will come up than players not mentioned.

Also worth noting that Federer has reached the semi-final or better every time for the last 9 years.

In other words he's never gone out before the semis here since winnng his first Slam in 2003.
