Murray eases to victory over Youzhny

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Andy Murray has advanced to the third round of the Cincinnati Masters with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win over Mikhail Youzhny.

Compared to last week in Montreal, this was an altogether sharper Murray. He played very solid and efficient tennis throughout, breaking Youzhny a total of five times and only conceding serve once.

Youzhny made an inauspicious start to the match, serving up two double faults and dropping serve with a netted backhand. Taking advantage of the Russian’s increasingly error-prone tennis, Murray raced to a double break advantage.

The world number 25 displayed more proactive, aggressive tennis in the next game, earning himself a break point opportunity but Murray held serve with good play including a well-struck forehand down the line followed by a smash.

Murray claimed the first set with strong serving; a 128 MPH ace brought up a set point, which he converted with another impressive delivery.

The world number 2 was able to put pressure on the Russian straight away in the second set, breaking serve after an excellent crosscourt backhand return forced a sliced backhand approach which slipped over the baseline.

With Youzhny serving at 1-3, Murray gained another chance to break after Youzhny hit his sixth double fault of the match. As the Russian’s forehand fell wide of the tramlines, the world number 2 broke again.

Although Youzhny broke back in the next game, his fightback was shortlived. Murray broke again as the Russian served to stay in the match, claiming a comfortable victory in one hour and ten minutes.

Murray will play Frenchman Julien Benneteau in the third round, who yesterday beat Radek Stepanek in three sets.
A good, efficient, report Katie - thanks! Good to see Andy playing such a solid and intelligent match - with plenty more gears to move up.

Very good report Katie.  Andy certainly seems to have benefited from his doubles matches in Montreal, which is encouraging to see.

I'm still waiting to see an interview, which hopefully someone will post on here, because TennisTV only show on-court interviews, and then usually from the QF onwards.

Yes - excellent photo. Andy's racket looks just like a blade. Fits perfectly with the Fiverings philosophy!

Nice one Katie  clap clap clap.

It was great to see Andy playing such a sharp, intelligent match yesterday. He knew he needed to focus on just getting it done, and he did. I think it was a fantastic start. I always like to see that there is room for a bit of improvement, that Andy has another gear to go to if he needs it, but he looked calm and at ease with himself, which has to be a good sign.

Good report Katie.    Like the pic too.   I keep trying to get someone to agree with me that Andy looks like his dad but so far no-one can see it except me.     I think that pic might help my case.

I think I can see it. Look at him around the mouth and also his eyes. That's definitely Will there. I think the problem, if I can call it that, is that the shape of his face is very much like Judy, and even more like her Mum, so that's who Andy appears to look like more.

It's funny, it reminds me a lot of my brother. Looking at him from the front he's a lot like my Mum was. Look at him sideways on and he is the image of my Dad.

tj you have made my day.     I see it more in profile rather than full face.     I think it's the nose.

Ah well, glad to be of help Smile. Truth be told, it's infuriating isn't it, when you can see something that, no pun intended, is staring you in the face and others can't?

You know, it is the nose as well, now I come to think of it! I'm sure the shape of his face confuses the issue, because, as I said before, it's like Judy and her Mum, but definitely, the actual features are definitely Will.

Oh yes, there was a pic last year of his dad consoling him after Wimbledon final, you could see the likeness there, also when his dad speaks on the Man Behind the Racquet docu - the way they move their head kind of to the side when talking.
