Murray honoured with OBE at the Palace

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Andy Murray was yesterday awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) at Prince William’s first investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of Cambridge smiled and talked to Murray for more than a minute about his recent back surgery and a letter the Duchess of Cambridge had sent him.

The Scot said, “He asked me about my recent back surgery, which I had a few weeks ago, and how I was feeling after Wimbledon.

“I teased him a bit as he had sent me a note before Wimbledon wishing me luck and his wife had written me a letter afterwards. Her handwriting was beautiful and I told him how fantastic it was compared to his.”

The Wimbledon champion was nearly late for the ceremony as he was subjected to a drug test at 8.20am, with his taxi booked for 8.30. “I was a bit worried I was going to be late but the taxi did a great job in getting us here,” he added.

What a wonderful day for Andy and his family. So very proud of him, he looked so handsome, and his hair was spot on. Great pictures of all the family, a day to remember!

Great stuff. Even had a little piece on it and a soundbite from Murray in the first few minutes of the news here tonight.

Sounds like Andy was really relaxed that he felt able to tease William about his handwriting.   You can tease me about mine (which is also terrible) any day Andy.  I'm struck by how straight Andy stands in all the pics I've seen from the side.

I was speaking to an ex-colleague of mine yesterday and she has a friend that was at the palace when Andy was  there. This friend said so many of the award recipients were asking Andy for a photo. She said he was so obliging and everyone seemed really thrilled to meet him. Who needs a Prince when you have the King of British tennis?
