Murray wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013

By for MurraysWorld.com on
Andy Murray was awarded the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award today to round off the most memorable year of his career to date.

The Scot, who accepted the award from Martina Navratilova over video-link, made history in July when he ended Britain's 77 year for a British male singles champion at Wimbledon. In a year hampered by injury he was also victorious in Miami and at Queens, as well as making the Australian Open final and leading Britain back into the World Group in the Davis Cup.

Welsh rugby starlet Leigh Halfpenny and horseracing legend A.P. McCoy came 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Brit will now return to training in Miami ahead of his prospective comeback in Doha in two weeks time.

I haven't felt so emotional or so proud of Andy since that unforgettable day at SW19.  Winning this trophy clearly meant a great deal to him - not just the trophy itself but, I'm sure, finally the appreciation and recognition by the British public of what he has achieved and what he has gone through to attain these achievements.

Well done, Andy! Totally merited.

I understand that Andy polled more than 50% of the entire votes cast. Almost unheard of.

Roll on 2014! It should be a good year for Andy on the assumption that he has fully recovered from his operation and no lagging doubts remain.

Perhaps SPOTY 2014?

A most interesting programme with Andy getting his just deserts at last  What with that and being given his book "seventy seven" for Christmas. I can't wait for the 2014 season to begin

Great to see Andy so happy and proud to receive the Spoty award. With such a huge vote over 55% will let him see that he is appreciated by the British Public, at long last. He looked great and relaxed.
I can't wait for 2014, he is all set to tackle the AO and aims to win it.
Thank God we have moved on from the past weeks  postings which anyone not a member of MW would get the wrong idea of the site, they would not be aware that the slanging matches were not serious. Whistle

Bit puzzled by Andy's speech (maybe twas on 5 Live after SPOTY had finished).  Said he was 'hoping to play Abu Dhabi in about 15 days time'.  So, did he get the days wrong i.e 11 days time or the Event wrong i.e. Doha in 15 days time.

I was so nervous yesterday, I kept thinking what if he doesn't win.  I wanted to vote so bad but being in the US I couldn't.  I'm so happy for him, rock on Andy!! Super trophy
