Murray commits to Scottish Davis Cup team

Andy Murray has committed himself to the Scottish Davis Cup team for the next six years. The Scot’s decision to turn his back on the British outfit follows British Davis Cup captain Leon Smith’s assertion that he will lead the Scottish team should independence come about this September.

It’s a huge relief for Scots-born Smith to have the world number 8 backing the splinter group, especially as Murray’s commitment to the British team has at times been lukewarm over the last eight years or so.

Under ITF rules, the Scottish side would begin Davis Cup life at the lowest possible level. That means Europe/Africa Zone III, where less-than-esteemed opponents include Iceland, San Marino and Armenia.

At that level, Davis Cup ties are week-long events played in one location, with just two of the 16 nations promoted to Zone II. But Smith certainly has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal, with doubles specialists Colin Fleming and Jamie Murray already Davis Cup regulars for Britain.

At a packed press conference at the Napoli Tennis Club, where Britain will take on Italy in the quarter-finals of this year’s team competition next weekend, the Scot said, “It’s a golden era right now for tennis in Scotland. Col and Jamie are committed to the doubles and even Ross is checking his family tree. We could do very well.”

Smith said, “Andy’s not deterred by the gruelling schedule. A week-long series of dogfights on a public park against players ranked outside the world’s top 1000 is just the kind of confidence-booster the lad needs right now.”

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond chipped in, “I can’t wait for the boy to pull on that Saltire jersey and claim his rightful nationhood.”

The Scottish independence referendum takes place on 18th September.

The most worrying aspect is the rumour that this news has caused a split between Kim and Andy and who will get custody of the dogs?

Can't say that I am overly surprised by this news; I was reading something about it on a web site a couple of days ago. I'll search through my browser's history for the web address later and post it here.

There's a great quote from Sir Sean Connery about this in an article in the Times today.
Sorry can't post link since it's behind the paywall.

Judy travels a lot as does Andy so I think it should be Kim.     In any case Maggie May was a present from her parents.

Well that's a bit gutting. Davis Cup isn't going to be the same if the independance comes to fruition. Might have to follow Ross and look through my family history to see if I can find any valid excuse...
