I don't think that Murray can do as well, for as long, in the No 4 spot as Davydenko has done.

my impression is that Davydenko gets a lot of his points from the smaller tournaments - I prefer seeing Andy concentrate on the majors

What I was actually getting at is Murrays results this year and last year when not injured are equal to Davydenkos results during the time he held the 4th (and even 3rd) spot.

Or to put it another way, Murray is able to achieve 52 week ranking points totals easily good enough to be number 4 - and as good a number 4 as Davydenko was.

I was saying so because I feel people dont realise that what Murray is already achieving results-wise, warts and all, puts him 'best of the rest'.

That's what I thought too - that's why I was questioning Jameslaprendi's comment "and you'll find Murray is doing no worse than any number 4 in recent times" as Davydenko has been very consistent to hold on to his No 4 spot as long as he has.  I don't think that Murray can do as well, for as long, in the No 4 spot as Davydenko has done.  However, I would like Murray to prove me wrong in this one.

Huh?  Murray is a better player than Davy and has a winning record over him.  I'd be astounded if he doesn't do as well as Davy, who has never reached a GS final.

I'm pretty sure H-2-H is 3-3.  C'mon Clydey, you should know that here's your EVIDENCE!

I think we all agree or should agree that Murray is better than Donkey

Anyway, I think the question here was the consistancy, not who's the better tennis player - although consistancy is one measure of who is the better player...

My mistake.  Forgot to count Davy's win earlier this year.  That said, Murray has come out on top in recent meetings.  I don't really count Davy's two earlier wins, the same way I don't count Ancic's win over Federer in 2002.

Yeah, it's like Andy/Stan being 3-3. Andy's totally got that H2H cause Andy's won most of the recent stuff.

You can't get 'lots of points' from the minors - there are only 4 of those counting towards your total once you've played top 20 for a while... and with top tournaments giving 300 and 250 for a win, that's barely 1000 points... plus Fed and Nadal nab those, so more likely 200 and 175 tournaments for 700-800... this does not a no 4 make!

Davy's strenght is that although he rarely wins a major (never a GS I think), he almost never loses early on, so has consistent QFs and SFs in them... only way to stick around p4 that long.

Yeah, count the heads.

Re: Murray is Brilliant « Reply #24 on: September 02, 2008, 08:41:23 AM »

Yeah, DD's almost always there in the last 8 or 16 so he always has a solid base of points.

Which is nice to stay in p4, but frankly is also a great way to be completely forgotten 24 months after you retire. Think Or, indeed, be completely forgotten while you're still playing lol.

I far prefer Andy's alternating between brilliant and crap, and if he can keep it going then he should keep a good points total going.

If he ever elevates it to alternating between brilliant and average then he'll be easily in the top two.

And yes, Murray is brilliant.       Super

1 GS semi, 1 MS title and 1 semi in the last 12 months makes Davy very much the best of the rest in my view, and he should be consigned to a much lower ranking asap!

I concur, Murray is... what's the word  confused ah, yes... brilliant! kicking

Very true, in fact I read an article once on how Davy was the only top 3 without a major sponsor... he can choose his own shirts! No custom Nike or Fred Perry for him!

On the other hand, that kind of career guarantees you a decent income in a journalism career later on (in Davy's case the medium is unlikely to be TV though).

Maybe Andy will never quite be as consistent as Davydenko has been or still is, but I do feel Andy's the better player overall.  He has come such a long way since let's say 2005/2006. If you compare the Andy of 2005/2006 with the Andy we saw today, he's taken so many steps in the right direction since then. We've been very critical at times, sometimes maybe rightly so, sometimes probably just because we were a bit too impatient with him when he was only a teenager, but today we should all be very proud of him. In the past he all too often used to lose important matches, while in the past couple of months that has completely changed. He won the match against Gasquet at Wimbledon after being two sets down, he defeated Djokovic at Cincinnati, and now he's come through the matches against Llodra and Melzer without being at his best and showed such a brilliant performance against Wawrinka.

Well done indeed, Andy!  clap
