No, we understand how the ranking works, we were just saying that his official ranking is 13th

I can't believe this whole argument has happened purely because Mike forgot to put "will be" in his sentence but instead used "is" which is present tense.
Saying Andy IS 14th is a false statement when ATP say his current ranking is still 13th. We are not confused here - we understand that this thread is designed for predicting Andy's ranking for the next week but that doesn't mean we don't sometimes discuss his CURRENT rank and because of this it's helpful to distinguish between the two by using the appropriate language.
What you were trying to say Mike was not wrong but could easily be interpreted as false due to your use of words, that's all.

Well dont accuse me of being wrong! And you can always post that in Andys Official Ranking Thread, not this one.

I can now see why people get very annoyed by your way of arguing! And dont say this whole argument is because I forgot to post something. Thats boll**ks. I've not done anything differently to whats been posted in here for the last few months. Perhaps Cates just not used to how this thread works! And I honestly dont mean that as an insult, I just mean this probably isnt one of her most visited threads, so she might have picked up on what she thought was a mistake by me.

I can't recall anyone refer to Andy's future ranking in present tense here. We always use the words "predict", "future", "next week", "will be".

We've been saying it like that for months. Because this is such an up to date ranking prediction we usually go with the players ranking that day based on points deducted and gained. for consistancy and ease a players ranking is only OFFICIALLY updated once a week. But effectively it is affected and changes everyday. Which is what we ALWAYS do in this thread, and is what Mike did here. So Mike wasn't even wrong with his terminology. He didn't forget to put 'will be' he meant to put is, and was perfectly right to do so. This is cause we don't always KNOW what Murray will be cause it's usually complicated. We put where he is with points deducted then put how that can change with him and/or others gaining points.

But then when we said his official ranking is 13th why didn't someone simply say "I was referring to his future/potential rank?" All we did was state the official rank, that's is the correct and current rank by the ATP.
By the sounds of it this whole argument could have been resolved before it started by someone simply clarifying that they were not saying his official rank but what his rank might or will be in the future.

His weekly running rank is 14th Frodo Noobins!
When his 140 points are taken off, because he was defending a Finals this week, he will be 14th. Youhzny overtakes. Noone else around him plays, so cant overtake!
Is that not what this says? And in the spirit of Cate's original post.

I see what you mean.
I just think that if regular members like me and Cate can be confused by the language used then it's worth briefly clarifying when you're not stating the official rank. So where appropriate use words like "will be" or "might be" or "potentially".

I disagree. He is ,as of the time of mike's post... 14th. End of story. It;s just not been UPDATED yet. But he is OFFICIALLY 14th. Nothing can or will change that.

No, the official rank is what the ATP say it is when they decide it! If a rank is not published yet by the ATP then the media considers it "unofficial", I also consider it as such. However you are free to say that a rank you have calculated is official, that's your freedom but unless the ATP publish it, then it isn't.
To argue against the above is compeltely futile because you have the world's media saying you're wrong.

We're not arguing that point. This thread is for Andys Ranking Next Week. To argue that point is completely futile.
One other thing, when did I say his Official Ranking is 14th???
Quote from: scotsman75 on July 30, 2007, 07:20:00 PM
Officially he's still 13th but as we've done in this rankings thread for the last few months, we've taken the points off on the Monday and seen how he and his competitors have faired. So hes 14th. And Staying 14th Sir Noobalot!
See, I even explained things.
