Blasphemy is a victimless crime

Re: Murray vs Eysseric « Reply #210 on: May 26, 2008, 04:26:19 PM »

I've just been watching the match on Eurosport again.  I have to say, I think we may have been harsh during the match, what with the nerves.

In the last two sets, Andy played some great tennis.  In the last set, in particular, he was attacking more and coming to the net to finish off points.  I'm pleasantly surprised at his performance towards the end, having watched it back without being worried about the outcome.

i agree with u because i have been watching it today as well and he really did not play that bad and there are plenty of positives to take out of the match. His volleying was amazing as well u really should not be so harsh on him at all because he is capable of doing well here.

Basically, compare him to Berdych - similar type of match - nearly top-10 player against a no-body, and I've actually heard of Berdych's nobody before: the trashed him sth like 6-1 6-0 6-0. OK the cold factored in, you couldn't expect that clear a result, but a 5-setter?! Plus it doesn't help him: if he's already a bit low from the cold, having such a long match before a difficult opponent is not ideal. But hey ho, water under the bridge, let's see what he can do today!

Yup, I'm also baffled as to how people can watch this back and then come to that conclusion. They haven't seen Murray play well for so long that they're actually happy with that performance lol

let's see what he can do today!

I only watched the last two sets, granted, But I didn't think it was that bad. I wasn't tainted by the crapness of the two before that I suppose, but that just means I'm able to just judge those two sets and I thought he played some really good points. He was getting good length and power on the ball, and he was making his opponent run about. A very good and valid tactic to employ when they're knackered!

Plus, we have to remember age isn't everything. That match so much reminded me of Andy/Nalbandian, Wimbledon 05. Without the weight of expectation and a little flourish at a home slam the up-and-coming teenager can be a little tricky.

And with what he's said about his practice time and his infection are you surprised he was cautious and hit a lot of errors. I actually am really pleased he was looking as fresh as he was at the end of five sets when he's been taking antibiotics for a week. That says a good deal about his fitness.

Do people have trouble reading on here or do they simply ignore what others say?  Read my post again.

ttrules was agreeing with what I said, regarding the last TWO sets.  Neither of us suggested the performance was great.  We said that the last two sets were much better.

Watch the last two sets again and tell me Murray was woeful in them.  He attacked well and volleyed well.  It was much different from the previous two sets.

I can't believe someone can say Murray was "appalling" in the last two sets.  That's just ridiculous.

But don't you think that it's the simple fact of Murray finally being able play his game because his opponent had died off? I'm sure Murray had it in him to play like the last two sets throughout the entire match but his opponent probably prevented that from happening.

Not really.  Even the Eurosport commentators said that Eyserric had got a second wind.  He broke Andy twice in the last set and hit some great winners.  The main difference is that Andy came forward and used some short angles that allowed him to get into the net.  Granted the angles worked because Eyserric wasn't moving as well, but he wasn't out of it.

Andy vs Nalbandian is an example of a player truly being out of it.

Eurosport commentators will say he upped his game, the newspapers will say he won purely down to superior fitness and I will say he is a jammy bast**d, either way I really hope you're right. Smile

It was probably a combination.  At least the last two sets were far more positive.  Prior to that it reminded me of his match of Davydenko earlier this year.  He just didn't attack at all in that match and Davydenko wasn't for giving errors.

I agree with you. I watched a replay of the earlier stuff on telly at lunchtime and he was definately actually better in the last 2 sets. If he'd started playing like that earlier in the 3rd he'd have closed it out in 4. Eysseric did get worse and couldn't find a first serve in his legs but if Andy had played how he played at the end he would have won a lot earlier.
