BBC pundits don't even mention Murray now...
« on: June 15, 2008, 06:44:31 PM »
Previously when top players were being discussed, his name was always thrown in the mix by the BBC pundits. Now they can barely bring themselves to mention his name. I think they have finally accepted that Murray isn't going to turn into the player they had hoped.

If true, im glad they're alot more measured.
If you watch any of euro 2008, you'll hear the commentators going bananas about all the english based players, any english referee/linesman or do a feature on a random fan's cousins' best friend who once went on holiday to england.
The biggest news story before and during the tournament has been who the new chelsea coach is, how obvious it was croatia would do well (incl how super duper they did against Germany) and how 'weird' it is that Russia have struggled.
The english slant on the sports world from the british media is far more biased than it is in other countries, and in fact was picked up on by austrian media pre-tournament.
Tho, I suppose Murray is scottish - so he can be their 'our Andrew' when hes looking good and swept under the rug when they're not so sure.
Its all good by me, its all a sideshow.

In the finals today on the BBC they asked the question where Murray would be up there to challenge for Wimbledon this year when talking about Nadal... so I think you might be wrong. They might be a little more restrained now but they still often mention Andy.

Jamesolaprendi, what you wrote actually couldn't be further from the truth, at least from what I've experienced. I've lived in 4 countries for a reasonable amount of time, and I found the UK least like that! Its extremely natural for a countries media to focus on its country more then any other, and from what i've experienced, the UK isn't like that. Also, I read a lot of news from foreign countries, and foreign mags, and its also the case with that. Just this week, for example, I was reading a South African cricket magazine, and it was ten times more biased then any mag I've read in the UK.

Its just really a thing I strongly believe in. People go on and on about how the media build up our sportspeople so much, and other complaints against the media for being so biased for England, and for being so focused on England. I've lived in quite a few places, and everywhere its like that, many places worse then by us!

James is 100% correct. Don't even insult the rest of the United Kingdom by suggesting that coverage is balanced. You are being extremely naive if that's what you really think.

I don't give a sh*t how strongly believe it. What you are saying is a complete insult.
How many times have you heard the Scottish football team mentioned during Euro 2008? Compare that with how often they mention England.

I'm not talking so much about England vs Scotland, more about media concentrating on English/UK matters now in the Euros. But anyway, I agree England get much more coverage and support then Scotland, but I belive that's how it should be seeing as its far bigger. I don't complain about the north-east of england receiving less coverage then other areas of England, although it does, because i understand that smaller population means less interest, and therefore less coverage. Do you think in the US, for example, that New York and Washington don't get the lions share of national news coverage?

I think it's very fair to give the England team more coverage than the Scottish team.

Anyway, I'm not in england at the moment, but i still read a huge amount of English media coverage of the Euros, and I've seriously read a lot about Scotland - almost everytime the group of death gets mentioned, they speak about Scotland.

You cannot compare a part of England to another country. Scotland is a country and deserves just as much coverage as England, particularly during national broadcasts. The reason we have local broadcasts is to focus on specific areas. During a national broadcast, such as the Euros, the rest of the UK deserves just as much coverage.
The UK is not England. The fact it has a bigger population does not make it more important. If you want to compare importance, let's talk about the various contributions each country has made to the world. I repeat, a bigger population does not give England the right to more coverage, particularly when other countries are barely mentioned. Can you recall Scotland being mentioned during the Euroe 2008 overage? I can't.
