I think he's definitely not taking part in the relay.

My opinion regarding DC.
In a selfish way, I hope he does compete, because he is the best in the country. Not that it's likely to win medals bar the relay if he runs in it.......
On the other hand, his punishment for rules in place at the time was to miss the Olympics. Hence, he should probably follow through with that.... HOWEVER - Alex, you said "he could run whatever else he likes". Well unfortunately, despite him only being banned from the Olympics, he is missing out on high profile meets in Europe this year. Not getting any invites. So despite serving his 2 year ban from the sport and making a comeback as a clean athlete, people are shunning him.
IMO the WORST part of all this is the fact that it's his 2nd comeback and in the first one no one batted an eyelid. They were happy to have him represent GB and suddenly it's all change. I could understand if they had just got all flustered and high and mighty because of his efforts to get to Beijing but ex-athletes, the BOC and UKA have all been on his back all year. It's quite ridiculous. The man won a World Silver medal at the indoors for crying out loud!
So with that point in my mind, I can't blame the guy at all for challenging the rules. So so so many people have been so unfair to him regarding the above. I really hope he gets to run.
As for the rule itself, I would recommend a 4 year ban but not a ban for life from the Olympics. 4 years out from all competitions is likely to damage an athletes career more than 2 years out.....

Cavendish makes History!
What a performance by this young lad. Awesome. I hope he gets gold in the Olympics!
Here's a little tip from a punter on the BBC for you as well, one which I am considering backing!
1613: Cavendish, I'm sure you know, becomes the first Briton to win three stages of the Tour in the same year.
1609: "Great result, well done Cav!! Right... I'm off to the bookies, he's got to be sports personality of the year, especially if he does anything in the Olympics!"

Why is he only ranked 147th overall?

Because the overall rankings are done on how long it takes you to cycle each stage in total. In one stage he finished last after having a crash with a football and in other stages he was miles behind. He's a sprinter and is likely to vie for the green points jersey in future years.

How's he doing in the points competition this year, surely 3 wins has to put him close to the top?

No because the points are dished out over the stage. You need to be placed high up in each sprint in the middle of each stage to gain points. You get points for 1st 2nd 3rd etc across each line. Not sure how many places get points, somewhere between 3 and 5. May vary.
He's 5th, 41 points behind the leader of that competition. Not very likely to win it, but that was never his aim this year. Once he develops a bit of experience, he will probably be going for that jersey in future years.

22 I think. Quite young for a cyclist. He's a very good prospect for the future anyway
Don't expect him to win the yellow jersey though, that's not his forte. He should be up there for medals at the Olympics though. Favourite for Gold in the men's madison.
