Clay confirmed as Davis Cup surface
« on: November 20, 2007, 07:58:24 PM »
Great Britain will take on Argentina on clay, as expected, after they confirmed the newly built 14,500-capacity Parque Roca in Buenos Aires will host the tie.
Andy Murray, ranked 11, will be relied on heavily following Tim Henman's retirement but is the only Britain who is ranked in the world's top 100.
Compare that to Argentina who are spoiled for choice with 11 top-100 players. These including number nine David Nalbandian, number 15 Guillermo Canas, number 20 Juan Ignacio Chela and number 23 Juan Monaco.
The tie will be played on the weekend of 8-10 February.

No surprise this as it's their favourite and strongest surface and probably our weakest surface.

Yeah but Murray may have proved that it's not a problem for him when he did play on it this year.

Yeah it could be a bit of a masacre. I was mildly optimistic in the beginning of October but if Nalbandian starts the season as he ended it we'll be slaughtered!

We all knew that Murray would have to win both his singles, that's still the case. It's not really about anything else, as I reckon we've got a good shot at the doubles. And the other two singles were always going to be lost regardless of who was on form or not. This changes nothing, Murray has to win.

It changes that Murray has to beat a guy that has the form to beat Federer as opposed to a has been who Murray almost beat when he was ranked outside the top 300!

What do you mean, he would've had to play nalbandian at least once anyway, and that doesn't change. Also canas has proved he's not just a clay courter. I think neil is right, doesn't make a lot of a difference...

Of course current form makes a difference! Having to play Nalbandian doesn't change, that's not what I'm saying. But the fact that Nalbandian is now in great form does. If forms stay the same I can't see Andy beating the Nalbandian from Paris and Madrid. I could have seen him beating the Nalbandian that played the rest of the season.

I wasn't really commenting on the clay. But I suppose I shouldn't have put it here.

If Murray is playing well heading into the DC match, I think most of you will change your mind. Lets not forget, Murray has the game to beat anyone and whose to say he cant win his two singles against Canas and Nalby? (most likely who he'll play). I seriously think we have a real shot in doubles aswell. Yes, Argentina are the strong favourites -why wouldn't they be with the players at there disposal. But the fact remains is that its the best of 5 matches and all of them can't play at once. Therefore, I reckon AM has a good shot at winning both his singles. We know how good he is! The split with Brad may be a blessing in disguise as I think he will express himself more freely on court as apposed to doing what Brad told him or wanted him to do. He will be working on the technical side of the game as well and not just power. If I'm being honest, I dont think the DC match is as clear cut as the bookies make it.
