It's a Murray Duck!

DC World group play-off draw « on: April 09, 2007, 12:21:53 PM »

The draw is made on Wednesday the 11th April (that's Wednesday)

Possible opponents-

Chile
Romania
Croatia
Australia
Czech Republic
Switzerland
Belarus
Austria

Correction: Nations have now been seeded. This puts possible opposition as-

1. Croatia
2. Australia
3. Slovak Republic
4. Belarus
5. Chile
6. Romania
7. Czech Republic
8. Austria

SO WE WON'T MEET SWITZERLAND!!!

I've had a look at the teams, and the flight options Wink and I fancy Austria. Obviously Romania or Belarus would be the best draw for quality but it's not exactly the nicest of destinations for a holiday! Definately hope to avoid Croatia and Switzerland. And Czech republic could be tricky customers too.

Home tie against Romania or Belarus would be the best case scenario though. Somewhere bmi fly from Aberdeen.

Don't wanna face Aus or croatia in particular. Switzerland are hard as Fed is likely to pick up two points, which means we need the other 3. It's possible, but would prefer one of the other 5

Chile wouldn't be too easy either. Hopefully we'll get a home tie and that will be a big advantage for us.  yay

Yeah anyone of them is beatable, even Switzerland and I hope GB have them because it will give Andy a chance to get revenge over Warwrinka and to play Federer which is always good so the Swiss for GB please.

Couldn't see us beating Switzerland, Australia or Chile as Federer, Hewitt and Gonzalez respectively will in all likelihood guarantee them 2 points already.
Hope to avoid those 3 and I'd fancy our chances against any of the others. Obviously Belarus or Romania would be the best draws in terms of our chances as Lorna said.

We beat Australia including Hewitt. :p

I don't think Federer should be allowed to play Davis Cup, ban! Very Happy

Likely teams to face GB:

Autralia
S#19 Hewitt
S#98 Guccione
D#10 Hanley
D#1389 Hewitt

Andy would probably win both his single rubbers and Henman should beat Guccione. Doubles could be tricky for Jamie but we shouldn't need him to win.
Likelihood of Winning: Good

Austria
S#28 Melzer
S#69 Koubek
D#18 Melzer
D#19 Knowle

Again Andy should beat Melzer and Koubek with some comfort, no luck for Jamie in the doubles but Tim ought to beat at least Koubek if not Melzer.
Likelihood of Winning: Good.

Belarus
S#54 Mirnyi
S#1222 Voltchkov
D#1 Mirnyi
D#1074 Voltchkov

Andy has a good record against 'serve n volleyers' so his two singles rubbers should be a piece of cake. Henman would beat Voltchkov and if you wanted to be greedy could beat Mirnyi in the singles too. Facing Doubles World #1, Mirnyi would be a challenge for Jamie in order for the whitewash.
Likelihood of Winning: Good.

Chile
S#5 Gonzalez
S#55 Massu
D#97 Gonzalez
D#122 Massu

If this is on clay the British team would be facing an uphill battle. Gonzalez and arguably Massu would be favourites to beat Andy, let alone Tim. If it's on hard or grass it's a 50/50 battle: Murray/Gonzalez and Massu/Henman would be hard to call. At least Jamie would be favourite in the doubles.
Likelihood of Winning: Poor.

Croatia
(rumour has it, Ljubicic retired after the defeat to Germany)
S#13 Ancic
S#105 Karlovic
D#90 Zovko
D#133 Ancic

If Ljub has retired we would surely be favourites, if not then like Chile we are facing an uphill battle. Asssuming he has retired I'd fancy Andy against both big servers and Timmy to beat Karlovic in order to get the 3 wins we need. Would also be a good chance to keep Jamie's 100% record in the doubles.
Likelihood of Winning: Above Average.

Czech Republic
S#14 Berdych
S#76 Hernych (Stepanek hasn't played since 2004)
D#7 Damm
D#16 Dlouhy

On his day Berdych could cause a problem to anyone on the tour and Hernych has beaten Tim recently so this looks tough. Assuming we lose the doubles to a very strong Czech pairing of Damm and Dlouhy, Andy would need to beat both Berdych and Hernych as well as Tim avenging his deafeat to Hernych. We'd definitely need home support on this one.
Likelihood of Winning: Average.

Romania
S#109 Pavel
S#666 Hanescu
D#27 Pavel
D#208 Mergea

This one should be in the bag, whether it's home or away. You'd fancy both Andy and Tim to beat the ageing pair of Pavel and Hanescu and really Jamie should be looking at another scalp in the doubles.
Likelihood of Winning: Very Good.

Switzerland
S#1 Federer
S#36 Wawrinka
D#38 Allegro
S#206 Federer

With Federer in the side the Swiss become arguably the best team in the world. He's odds on favourite to win any singles rubber and has an impressive doubles record too. So with him in the team we are f***ed. However, hopefully he won't turn up and the tie will be very winnable. Murray could finally avenge the defeats to Wawrinka and beat the Swiss #3 too, and Henman shouldn't have to break sweat to beat Federer's replacement either. Allegro is distinctly average and would predict Jamie would tear him and his partner apart in the doubles.
Likelihood of Winning without Federer: Good.
Likelihood of Winning with Federer: Poor

This is assuming all the British lads are fit and Andy and Tim are able to play all 4 singles rubbers if neccessary, while Lloyd picks Jamie and probably Aucks in the doubles (well anyone half decent that isn't Tim or Andy).  Think

Thoughts appreciated and if anyone has worked out who we are able to face home and who we'd have to face away let me know. (the only ones I've heard is Australia at home and Chile away).

That's fantastic summary. I'll add that Fed has played in the WG playoff 2 years in a row so we can probably guarentee he'll play. I still see it as possible though. on the right surface on the right day I would hope Andy could give him a game. And I'd like the Murrays for the doubles. But Romania would definately be our best draw.

Can i also add, for the 20th time on this site that Auks will NEVER be picked with Jamie to play doubles cause they both play Ad court so it wouldn't work. plus it's too much of a risk to pick 2 doubles specialists in case ont of the singles guys needs replaced on the Sunday. As far as these guys are concerned in the team it's one or the other.

So being drawn against Romania or Chile would be our best bet because (with thanks to Spud) we are likely to win.  And (with thanks to Lorna) that the draws look b  to be at home so that we can all go away for a Davis Cup weekend again woohoo!  Lol.
