I think the trick was that he stayed separate from the final group and only revealed himself at the end of the race
hence having film of all the final group which can be disgarded if they did not win.

As for the final 4 grand race, I think there were clues to show he put a bet on all horses

1. he never let her see the bet he put on

2. there were only 4 horses (saves 8k)

3. he named the wrong horse .

4. he is also a magician so changing the ticket is a standard magic trick

5. apparantly she hadnt read the ticket (why?)

Having said that I read an explanation on the net regarding the photo trick...and still never got it ...lol

I can't remember apart from it was 9 hours of attempts. You can visibly see he was drained, I even sensed something was up before he told everyone that it had been 9 hours.

7776/(6^5) = 1. There's no way he guessed the last horse using "The System" because who had the other 5 horses.... there was only one person!

Whether he guessed randomly or by studying form (or whether he switched tickets or whatever) is all open to speculation.

Yeah, count the heads.

Re: Derren Brown: The System « Reply #28 on: February 22, 2008, 03:18:36 PM »

I actually find it interesting that he managed to get 10 heads in a row in just 9 hours. Using laws of probability, it would take on average around 500 goes to get it right. I think its more likely they edited the film, but they'd never admit it...

Just stumbled on this thread while reading old posts (sad, eh?), and thought I had to respond to that (sadder, eh?).

If you assume that each unsuccessful instance lasts (on average) 5 tosses (because obviously he abandons the run of ten as soon as it fails), then you would get 511 x 5 = 2,555 tosses before the start of his successful run (on average).

If each toss takes about 5 seconds (time yourself), then on average he should start the final run in 213 minutes.
Which is just under 4 hours  (if you didn't see the programme, he just stood in front of a plastic? bowl tossing the same coin into it, over and over again).

So, even if he stopped for cramp or coffee from time to time, I'd say he was actually unlucky for it to last 9 hours.

You're assuming basically 25 seconds on average per go. I'd say it'd take at least double that, because he'd definitely pause a bit between each go, and restart the camera - i doubt they just filmed straight through.
But you're right, its not as bad as i thought it was.

Actually they kept filming continually (they showed some of the 9 hour out-take at the end of the programme).
But each run did have an intro where he basically said: 'Now I'm going to toss ten heads in a row, to show that I can control probability.'
Sorry, missed that.

So maybe nine hours was about right, given a lunch break and stuff.
