They're idiots, the guys who sort out the rankings for the ATP. They also very often make mistakes, i've spotted 2 in the top 20 already.

Basically, Federer did not lose any points this week, because he wasn't defending any. The points from Dubai last year came off the rankings last week, because it was played a week earlier last year.

Wrong, it had everything to do with the point she was making. Rennie said that she disliked the fast serves, sarah said it had always been like that, I pointed out she was in fact mistaken. TOTALLY RELEVANT
Typical bloke! Not bothered about annoying me by proving me wrong, but you won so it's okay!

Speaking as a bloke, I'd like to take the opportunity to object to being compared to Neil.

Don't worry!
Its actually quite interesting - for GS and MS tourneys, they give 5 points for a first round loss, but for IS tourneys they give nothing. I remember they used to give 5 points even for IS tourneys, but they changed it. What i don't understand is why they kept it by GS and MS tourneys - why do you deserve anything?
Well, let's face it, for those who ACTUALLY qualify on merit for IS a 5 points for losing R1 isn't even gonna make it into their top 18. So there's very little point handing them out. But if you're gonna award points for qualifying in MS you've got to make it beneficial to accept a WC. Cause you can't possibly give more points to those who don't even make it to the first round. Otherwise no one would ever accept a WC.
And because MS and GS are compulsory I suppose there has to be some sort of points penalisation for not showing. And you can't take points away from them. So giving everyone who does show points, in a way, is a penalty for those who don't.

I understand what you are saying that they shouldn't give points for IS events, but I still think they shouldn't give for MS and GS events. Your first reason about wildcards I don't agree with, because I don't believe anyone would not accept one just for the few points you gain from qualifying. Your second point about penalising players who don't turn up, I don't agree with because the sort of players who wouldn't turn up are only the really top players who aren't going to care about 5 points.
I wonder what the official line from the ATP is, why they give points in some events but not others.

I bet it's because they're compulsory.
And, while it's not a huge concern. The top players are gonna care about those 5 points when it's the difference between no 1 and not, top 4 seeding and not, getting to Shanghai and not. Making the top 16 seeding or not. And with it so close at most of these areas it will make these differences on a regular basis.
