After Federer lost to Canas twice, I said it would only go down hill from there, that's exactly what has happened. I doubt very much Federer will regain the consistency that has everyone see him as the unbeatable. Soon he will simply be one of the very good players at the top.

Yup, two grand slams and another final from there on. Looks like he fell into a yawning chasm of failure didn't he?

So what? He can still win the next 3 slams and be going down hill if he's not so successful at the other tournaments.

Yeah but 7 tournaments won as opposed to 12 in 2006 and 11 in 04 and 05. That is quite a drop.

It doesn't matter about the No 1 spot, or the other tournaments to Fed. All that matters to him is the GS's and Shanghai.

15 this year, so less than half won at 7. Lost 8
18 last year and 12 won. Only 3 more played yet he won 5 less. Lost 6.
18 again the year before with 11 won. Lost 7.
19 in 2004 and 11 won. That's 8 lost.
On another note, Nadal ended 04 ranked 51. End of 05 he was no 2 and has been since!

I think you'll find that federer only played 16 tournaments last year, just he missed two mandatory events, so its counted as 18. This year he will also end up (after shanghai) having played 16.
The best way to compare this year to last year, is that at this time last year he had won 11/15 tournaments, but this year only 7/15.
Although a slight defence for him is that this year he played harder tournaments, in that he played more mandatory events and less smaller tournaments.

I just went with what it said on the atp rankings page. But you're right, he has played all the masters this year where he didn't last year.
In 06 the only time he lost before the final was Andy in R32 in Cincinatti.
In 2005 he lost in a couple of semis but the lowest he got was quarters.
This year he has 3 R16 losses and one R64.
