No day-dreaming now (put the M.M's back in the cupboard) ........ realistically can he make 4 or 5?

Realistically we'll be lucky if he's in the top-10 come the end of the year.

He can very realistically make 4th. In fact, I'd say he's likely to make 4th if he plays reasonably till Wimbledon...

He'd need about 1250 points from mandatory tourneys. He could get thatby Wimbledon by reaching a quarter and a semi in the two slams, and 3 quarters and a semi in the 4 masters. If you think he should be top 4, then he should get that!

Wow - that's a tall order isn't it! By the two slams you mention, this includes Wimbledon then. I also don't see him doing as well as would be required @ R.G.
I don't
think
he should be top 4 at all - I was wondering if he
could
be top 4 and was doubting it but was open to being proved wrong.

It appears the Times agrees with you Marky.

Except that recently, the world No 1 has been into the press room within 15 minutes, a touch flustered and not knowing what to expect as a question and what his answer might be. That was the case at the Pacific Life Open, after his 6-3, 6-2 defeat by Mardy Fish, the American, in the semi-finals, his worst day at the office in seven years in terms of fewest games won in a three-set match. Federer played jumpily with the microphone, much as he had done with his game on the court against Fish, a former top20 player who fell away to No 341 at the start of 2006 after a series of injuries, the worst of which, to his left wrist, required two operations the previous year. In this tournament, Fish had beaten Nikolay Davydenko, Lleyton Hewitt and, in the quarter-finals, David Nalbandian, but no one had anticipated what a destructive force he had become. He beat Federer in 63 minutes.

No way, he'll have to lose first round in another GS and a couple of the Masters Series for that.
If you look at the Race he is currently 6th. I think most people would say he hasn't had a good start to the year, so if he can come in 6th (admittedly after just three months) not playing well, he should easily be top 5 if he plays well at Wimbledon and the on North American hard courts.

I have no problem with either of them taking it although it would be nice to see Nadal take non-clay Slam.

What I was trying to say is that I don't think anything at all - I am waiting to see what happens next as the plot unfolds. don't think I'm communicating my thoughts too well .......... are you a Brit or an American ?

Djokovic maybe but Nadal no.
I am thinking it is definitely a three-man race for the top spot and that Federer's 'frailty' has been well and truly exposed (for whatever reason - mono/impending fatherhood !!??). I also think that Djokovic has found a way to make hay with both Federer's and Nadal's game (on hard courts) - it'll be interesting to see what happens next i.e. can the rest of the field, at least some of them, follow Djokovic's example.

I'm English, but don't worry, I understood you, I was just wondering where you think he should be ranked at the moment? (that is, his current ATP ranking doesn't take in to account his long injury last year, so its a bit of a false ranking...)

He's a bit too flaky right now for me to feel confident with regard to his ranking. He would have to become more consistent for me to be comfortable making any kind of prediction - and - having said that, I am too conservative a person to go out on a limb, and not just tennis - much prefer to hedge my bets.

Djokovic maybe but Nadal no.
Rafa almost had it last year, it was a very close final, both won 26 games each!
Although Nole retired during the semi with Rafa, he was still on course to lose in 4.
People mistakingly wrote Rafa off before Wimbledon last year as a fluke in 06, but 2 finals in a row is no mean feat!
