He still got to the semi finals of a grand slam with no preparation due to being ill and then playing poorly throughout. No way was he 100% fit. It still took the number 3 at the absolute top of his game to beat him. And it was closer than the score suggests. If Federer had won that tiebreak, he'd have won in 5 without a doubt IMO. That is, if Djokovic didn't pull out with a blister or a broken toe nail or something.

I think it's fair to say that now he has Nadal and Djokovic around, he might not win another grand slam without actually being challenged like he has done in the past. But to say he'll struggle to win another one full stop is way over the top. It can only be good for the game if we now have 3 likely GS winners instead of just 1 or 2.

Mark, you said this when Canas beat him at IW and Miami last year.  Rolling Eyes
Yes and he's got worse and worse since then, so I stick by that comment.

He has only made 3/4 GS finals after that comment, silly me. Wink

And?  He still got worse and worse regardless of him winning those slams.

I personally think the field of challengers has become stronger, I personally don't think he's become 'worse' in the last 12 months. But still, I don't see him losing his no 1 status this year unless Rafa performs better than him at Wimbledon and the USO.

Whether it's the stronger field or him getting worse, he's lost his dominance and it's going to get a lot worse.

Rafa to finally win Wimbledon?

I think he will win it one year, most likely, not in 2008 though.

so many more errors from Fed in last 6 months
if Nole had believed more in US open final it was there for the taking too
now he does believe...and that gives Fed a bit of a problem

Indeed but are the errors due to a new class of opponents putting him under pressure? I think not - look at his performance against Jarkko, look at his general performance at the Aussie Open this week. The class of opponents may now be better but I think he's still getting worse regardless.

When I first read this I thought no, it's too early to say that just yet. This was an off-form Federer playing Nole possibly close to his best and Fed still gave him a close match.

Having slept on it though I think you are right in that his dominance is over. He will still win slams though just not 3 a year. It was an unbeleiveable run to make 10 GS finals on the trot, something no other male player has every done. It was bound to end sometime.

Not sure about No. 1 status though. I think he will hold on to that for the time being.
