Morning sickness?
I thought the most encouraging thing about the win against Fed wasn't the fact it was Fed but Andy's attitude and his game in the match. He was composed and happy and he served brilliantly.
Fed is under par but I think everyone's making too much of the glandular fever thing. People with bad glandular fever don't get to semis of slams and MS, they withdraw. Ancic had glandular fever and post viral fatigue and was out for 7 months. And he hasn't really been right since. Although he's getting better now. I think the difference we'll see in Fed this year is he won't just get through those little mid-tournament matches he shouldn't win. And that may be the difference between no1 and no3.

Even without bad glandular fever though, Fed could be affected for a time after... i'm not gonna say that that Fed's over just yet - i think he'll get better with a few months.

I agree, I think his decline will be a slow one. He'll still be in the top five by the end of this year I reckon.

He'll still be number 1 at the end of the year. He will win wimbledon and he will win 2 or 3 masters.

He's definately not over. He's still gonna win titles. But like I say, I think the difference is gonna be the tight matches. Once people get over the stigma more people will beat him.

Erm...... Well, without looking at numbers, he's have to average more points than everyone else over the year. Consistency is the key to number 1. So we're talkng finals minimum of the 3 slams, win's would help more obv, and 2 or 3 titles at masters.... highly unlikely since he's so far behind just now.
Short answer, it's possible, of course, because there's still 3/4 of the year to go. hence 3/4 of the points to play for.
If he wins everything he entres from now, he could be number one after wimbledon i would think, if other people drop points they got last year. If they don't, he'd probably have to wait til around the USOpen.

Realistically we'll be lucky if he's in the top-10 come the end of the year.

He can very realistically make 4th. In fact, I'd say he's likely to make 4th if he plays reasonably till Wimbledon...

He'd need about 1250 points from mandatory tourneys. He could get thatby Wimbledon by reaching a quarter and a semi in the two slams, and 3 quarters and a semi in the 4 masters. If you think he should be top 4, then he should get that!

It appears the Times agrees with you Marky.

Except that recently, the world No 1 has been into the press room within 15 minutes, a touch flustered and not knowing what to expect as a question and what his answer might be. That was the case at the Pacific Life Open, after his 6-3, 6-2 defeat by Mardy Fish, the American, in the semi-finals, his worst day at the office in seven years in terms of fewest games won in a three-set match. Federer played jumpily with the microphone, much as he had done with his game on the court against Fish, a former top20 player who fell away to No 341 at the start of 2006 after a series of injuries, the worst of which, to his left wrist, required two operations the previous year. In this tournament, Fish had beaten Nikolay Davydenko, Lleyton Hewitt and, in the quarter-finals, David Nalbandian, but no one had anticipated what a destructive force he had become. He beat Federer in 63 minutes.

No way, he'll have to lose first round in another GS and a couple of the Masters Series for that.
If you look at the Race he is currently 6th. I think most people would say he hasn't had a good start to the year, so if he can come in 6th (admittedly after just three months) not playing well, he should easily be top 5 if he plays well at Wimbledon and the on North American hard courts.
