Andy Murray will take on fifth seed Mario Ancic in the second round of the Heineken Open (Auckland) today. Andy will be second out on Stadium and play starts at 10PM GMT - discuss here.

Murray, ranked 62 in the world, one behind his opponent, raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set and seemed to be in a hurry to make the second round and a match against either Kiwi Mark Nielsen or fifth seed Mario Ancic. But the Dane fought back to level at 5-5 as both players struggled with their serves in the windy conditions - Murray had six double faults in his first three service games.
I didn't hear 1 boo despite reports suggesting there were boo's all round. There were a couple of "ooh, aahhs" but no booing, it was a light hearted joke. I would say it must be fanatical female rights people making a big deal out of it, grow a sense of humour is my advice.

In the 10th game Murray showed his frustration smashing his racket into the ground, breaking it and earning a warning from the umpire. He saved two break points in his next service game and broke the Dane for the first set.

The Scot broke Carlsen in the third game and was leading 5-2 when his 32-year-old opponent hurt his ankle. An injury timeout did not disrupt Murray, who broke for a 7-5 6-2 victory.

Murray said:
It's difficult to play matches when it's windy, especially at the beginning of the year, because it's difficult to get into a rhythm.

I didn't feel that sharp at the start of the match. I was 4-0 up but I didn't feel like I was playing great.

I won and that's the most important thing. I played better in the second set and hopefully that will give me confidence in my next match.

Wonder what Andy thought about being booed, probably just washed over him.  Doubt he will make the same mistake again.  And in case nobody knows why he was getting booed from all the females in the audience, while he was being interviewed on court after the match he said he and Carlsen both played like women in the first set, didn't go down too well. Whistle

I love the fact that he says stuff like that - although obviously it's pretty insulting and not a fab idea to say it in an interview. I'm sure he has total respect for the girlies though (as do I!).

His excuse was kinda interesting...
"I was watching a Hopman Cup match on TV from here and Kuznetsova said it after there were nine breaks in the first set, so that's why I said it."

So is he saying Kuznetsova said, "We played like women." !??!  Seems weird.

It was probably more to do with all the breaks in the first set, same as in the womens game.

Why do people take stuff like this to heart? He's a male pro tennis player and, if he played like a woman, that would mean he was performing below his best, right? Where exactly is the problem with that?

I agree with KitKat.

I think he was only commenting on the fact that there had been lots of breaks of serve. People do take these things the wrong way, though. If he said it in a court-side interview, maybe the crowd didn't get it?  Scottish dry sense of humour? Another lesson from the "think before speaking" school!

Anyway, I like his outspokenness too. Makes life more interesting.

goodjob  I think it's refreshing that he says what he likes and of course no one would have known what he was talking about if they hadn't seen that one match in the Hopman Cup.  Nice to see he's following the other tournaments as well as his own.

When I first read it it didn't seem obvious to me that it was insulting.  I thought he meant that he just wern't playing aswell as he could have done.  Plus I think that kind of thing has been stead in the past that its turned into an everyday saying if you get me?  Like I'm a crap thrower and I hate rounders or cricket, because I throw like a girl even though I am girl!  Maybe its because I have two older brothers who've been putting me down all my life and this kind off thing doesn't insult me because I've known worse.

Sorry if I havn't explained it clearly!

On activeboard, there was a report from a guy who'd been at the match and he said there wasn't really any booing - mainly laughter and a few ooohs and ahhhs - but no real booing.

It didn't bother me either Amy, I usually say that to my son ie he throws like a girl, maybe the New Zealand women like to think of themselves as strong as men weights

As I said in my view from the stands topic, I did not hear one boo. He said "we both played like women" and 95% of the crowd laughed, the interviewer laughed, Murray laughed and then said "Well it was difficult in windy conditions" or something like that.
"The whole crowd booed" my arse, get a sense of humour I say.

About the juggling, during Carlsen's injury break he did a few juggles of a tennis ball with his feet and head to entertain the crowd and in his interview he said "I usually shank it when I do it in front of a lot of people."

Doubt it, Andy might actually like all the controversy and attention from something that never was. I'd say he laughed at the reports and didn't mind. (my guess)
