In a press conference in New York this afternoon, Tim Henman confirmed speculation by announcing that he will retire from professional tennis following his appearance for GB against Croatia in the Davis Cup tie in September.

Tim cited his recurring back injury and the upcoming birth of his third child as reasons for his sudden, yet not unexpected, decision.

In a statement on his website, Tim thanked a number of people for their support throughout his long and successful career including his solid fanbase.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank all my fans for their incredible support not only on home soil but also around the world. I’ve always found it amazing that wherever I’ve found myself on court I’ve always been able to find at least one British flag in the crowd and, regardless of the score, the support I’ve enjoyed has always been unwavering.
For Tim, representing his country and playing at Wimbledon have been particular highlights in his career. It therefore seems only right that his career should end with a culmination of the two events. Hopefully he will do so while helping team GB to return to the World Group for 2008.

Word from Andy on Tim

Hey guys, what’s up?

So - you’ve probably heard the news today that Tim is going to be retiring after Davis Cup…

Obviously Tim has been a massive part of British tennis over the last decade, and I just wanted to acknowledge that myself.

I don’t think people fully realise what an amazing career Tim has had. If you make six Grand Slam semi-finals, four of them at Wimbledon, and get to four in the world, you’re pretty damn good. Nobody on the tour ever took Tim for granted that’s for sure. We’ve been really lucky to have him representing us, and I’ve been really lucky to have him as a teammate.

He’s just been a legend as far as British tennis is concerned, and I hope that he stays involved in the future because we need people like him around.

Cheers Tim, you’ll be missed…

Andy

Eyebrow raise.   naughty

F*CK YOU!

 Eyebrow raise.

It's a well known fact that Tommy hates Timmy but I don't think that he should have said that either.

Some people fail to grasp that Tim is the best British player since Fred Perry, and until Andy overtakes Tim's career record, he will remain so - FACT! Very Happy

Sorry Tim's retiring never felt he deserved all the slagging off he got from the "great British press".as for the comment on Andy's retirement that would mean after September there is no GB Davis Cup team??Some of the comments on here are more anti-Murray than pro, maybe the site should be re-named??.Voicing criticism and concern are one thing, but some of the comments I read have the "any-one but Murray, feel about them.I agree that Tim has been the best British player since Fred Perry.
