Here's your wake-up call Andy
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:47:20 AM »
Andy Murray's new coach looks forward to getting back into mainstream coaching with Murray as well as the rest of the British hopefuls.
Brad Gilbert -
IT'S just gone five in the morning, I'm on my second cup of coffee, I'm a morning man. It's a beautiful time of the day. The philosophy is that you get your practice in early, then maybe you get another one in later in the day - but the first one you definitely do early.
Andy is not the sort of person who will change his ways. If their egos start clashing, Gilbert is the one who will change or the relationship will end.

If Andy Murray isn't an early-morning person, that's going to change.
And it can never be the coach's way or the highway; the player will have his opinions and I hear Andy's are pretty strong. I'll certainly have mine and it's about where we meet.
In the week leading up to the US Open next month and during the Open itself, I'll be doing a lot of observing, getting to know his habits.

I am pretty sure that Andy is not the sort of person who will change his ways. If their egos start clashing, Gilbert is the one who will change or the relationship will end.

I think you're wrong there Arka. I think that if any relationship like this is gonna work it's gonna have to be a bit of give and take. Andy has hired the guy to teach him how to get the best out of his game and to be the best in the world. What's the point in that if you're not gonna do what he recommends. Sure Andy has his own opinions and they are pretty strong but that's where Brad's job comes in. He'll have to take Andy's views and ways and incorperate them into a schedule and a way of life that's gonna improve his game to the best it can be. He'll have to tell Andy what things he can do to improve and what things he's doing that are detrimental to his career. There's no formula, it's about moulding who the person is into the best he cann be. If Andy's clever and respects Brad as a coach (which i think he does) then he'll take that on board. The whole relationship will be pointless if Andy remains set in his ways.

I am not saying that Andy will dominate Brad.
Of course they will click.

I know people have talked about what I might be earning, but that’s up to them. I’m not doing this because of the money. That doesn’t matter to me. I’m doing this because I love it and I feel I can make a difference. All I’m thinking about is working.
i like this bit... shows he has alot of passion which is great and the record seems for itsself really

Hope Andy is morning person, if not then he will have to be.
I am hoping to see if Andy can reach further than 2nd round in US Open this year.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this coaching relationship, I think that Brad's a huge step in the right direction in Andy's career, and as a fan it's going to be exciting to watch his play improve.
And good luck to Andy, no more lay-ins for him

Isn't it exciting!!!
I think Andy will respect Brad and take on board what he says. If he REALLY doesn't agree with something then he probably won't change it because he's got a strong personality. I think they must respect each other, which I'm sure they do.

I disagree - as Agassi says Gilbert's the greatest coach of all time - Andy will just have to toe the line and get on with it. He'll need to put harder work in, if he's to progress up the rankings and win a Grand Slam!
