Jo Wilfried Tsonga

I think this Frenchman deserves a topic of his own. Looking at his progress reminds me of Murray in 2006 so I do feel that he will be top-10 by the end of 2009.

Tsonga didn't fail to show his qualities...Although Im disappointed with Andy's loss , I really have to agree he's a fantastic player and he'll make it to the top.

He's brilliantly idiotic at times.

If he plays like he did against Andy, more consistently, I think he could be top 15, if not top 20 by the end of the year.

Top-20 is almost a certainty by the end of this year...

I watched him play today and he will give Gasquet a good game. I think he will be top 10 by the end of the year.

Tsonga all the way! I said top-10 by the end of 2009 but that was my safe bet. Now I think he could do it this year.

No way will he be top 10 by the end of this year, he's just taken advantage of the very easy draw Andy would have had.

He just beat Gasquet so I would beg to differ.

I'm going with Mark on this one. Unless its just a fluke like that Baghdatis guy.

Ye Tsonga is quality just had a slow start due to injuries
he had a false ranking..unlucky for Andy to draw him

I doubt he will finish the year inside the top 20. It wasn't that long ago I was watching Josh Goodall push him in Queens Qualies. Everyone has a good spell once in a while.

You could say Andy just strung together two or three good spells (and some awful spells, and missed periods in between), and that was good enough to get
him
into the top ten.
Baghdatis is an even better example.
So even if this is just a phase Tsonga's going through, if it lasts a couple of months that should be enough to plant him in the top 20 for a year.

I think he will be top 20 for a few months after IW/Miami but after the grass season has finished I reckon he'll drop a bit. He still has to go deep in another MS/GS to stay at the top. Last year Andy accumulated most his points at San Jose, IW and Miami, when he was playing great. Those 3 are enough to get him into the top 50 alone, along with some good spells at the end of the year he got close to the top.
Baghdatis is a different case as he got to the final, while Tsonga is only in the quarters. Of course if he goes further then he will be top 20 at the end of the year. But I think Youzhny will take him out with no trouble.

This doesn't look too good for Andy either then!

But Andy stringing together good spells for his current ranking isn't because of awful periods in between, it's cause of missed periods. He was working his way up. His consistancy was improving before the injury.
