I think he will be top 20 for a few months after IW/Miami but after the grass season has finished I reckon he'll drop a bit.  He still has to go deep in another MS/GS to stay at the top.  Last year Andy accumulated most his points at San Jose, IW and Miami, when he was playing great.  Those 3 are enough to get him into the top 50 alone, along with some good spells at the end of the year he got close to the top.
Baghdatis is a different case as he got to the final, while Tsonga is only in the quarters.  Of course if he goes further then he will be top 20 at the end of the year. But I think Youzhny will take him out with no trouble.

But Andy stringing together good spells for his current ranking isn't because of awful periods in between, it's cause of missed periods. He was working his way up. His consistancy was improving before the injury.

But Tsonga is also on his way up. At Wimbledon, I think he was still outside the top 100, and now even before the AO he's in the top 40. Thats quite an improvement...

I know.  I was hoping at the end of last year that his inconsistency was due more to frustration at having to make a comeback before he'd even reached his proper position.  I'm just a bit wondering right now.  Guess I'll find out in the rest of the season, but have to admit I was hoping for a bit more. Still hoping he will produce, but like I say, I'm more waiting to see rather than expecting now.

It was one loss. We're particularly annoyed about it cause it's a slam but all the same ot was one match. Remember when he lost to Tipsarevic in Moscow we were all gutted but he went on to push Nadal, win St. Petersburg and come within points of Shanghai. As he gets stronger his consistancy will get better. And the mental aspect will follow because the more consistant you get, the more consistant you feel, the less you lose. Or something like that. This tournament is a blip in what will be a long and profitable career.

Tsonga will become one of his rivals no doubt, which makes this blip less concerning. Although Mark's right, the fact that actually during the match he should have beat him is what's disappointing.

All of what you say jsmall is true and I have said elsewhere that Tsonga was really good.  However if Andy is to reach as good as I hoped, he will need to get over these inconsistencies if he is to become where I had hoped he might go - top 3.

I'm just feeling that at the moment I'm not seeing that extra little edge you need to get there.

I will continue supporting Andy whatever, but I also will not expect more of him that I think he can deliver!!  So I'm waiting.  His fantastic beginning is not to my mind being met at the moment by a fantastic continuing and that is not just the open, it was also Kooyang.

Although, do not know if anyone else has seen this and don't have the link but I read somewher that there is a jinx on people who win Doha - apparently they all go out in the first round of the Au Open!!

A reporter said that to Andy when he lost and he said that ok, so Ljubicic did that last year. But prior to that Fed won Doha and went on to win in Aus so it's a load of rubbish! It happened one other time!

I agree with you on most of what you say too. If Andy is gonna reach the top the inconsistancies have to go, especially if they're gonna creep up in R1 of MS and GS. I just see encouraging signs that they will go as the confidence grows.

I've looked it up and I can see how the press jumped on it. Of the 16 winners of Doha, 8 of them have had R1 exits from the Australian open, including guys like Becker, Korda, Santoro and Koubek. There's been 2 Ws (Fed and Korda) 2 Ss (Fed and Edberg) 2 R16s (Courier and Edberg) and 2 R32s. So it is actually a bit of a trend. But I did this one time in an attempt to draw a link between Queens and Wimbledon and these things just don't work. Other than suggesting form, when the tournaments are a week beforehand I don't think it makes any difference. There are too many other factors involved.

Nah, it's a fairy tale it's fun...but when people start believing fairy tales they do often come true.

But we are drifting from topic.

Wonder who will win tonight Tsonga or Youzhney.  Their both on a roll and both really want it.
