Help. I dont want to wake up in the year 3000!

Re: Jo Wilfried Tsonga « Reply #60 on: January 24, 2008, 10:36:06 PM »

He was phenomenal today!!!

And with this whole argument about Murray in R1 - What you have to remember is that Murrays game is to frustrate players and make them change their gameplan. How many times has Murray beaten a top 10 player and everyone says but Federer/Roddick/Davydenko/Ljubicic didnt play their best game. Its because Murray dosent allow them to play their best game. Which is possibly why Tsonga wasnt looking as good as he has done recently. And why Murray has probably come closest to beating him this tourney!   Just a theory!

It certainly comes close and can you believe some people here actually think that Tsonga played on that level against Murray in r1! yawn

Ye he's on a different level now..at the moment a very very high level....if he stays that mentally strong Fed or Nole better watch out

I think he did play on basically that level for the first two sets, but not the 3rd, and not even the 4th. Mark, did you see the two matches (Andy's and Rafa's)? In the first two sets against Andy, he also played exceptionally IMO.

^ I do agree with that. It's in the 4th that I have the issue. I think Andy missed his chance in the 4th. And he let Tsonga get into a rhythm at the start by being slow off the blocks. 2nd set he was great, I had Andy beat there and then! but the 4th, Andy should have won it. And that's what would make me say he wasn't quite as good as today. He wasn't consistantly solid for 3 sets. not even 2 in fact!

I know, I know. I didn't really want to contradict myself but this was my actual opinion on the issue. But at the end of the day I still don't think it matters. As i say in the other thread!

Was thinking of starting a topic...'The Curse of the Aus Open'

Maybe a good thing Andy didn't get all the way to the final, as all the previous 'surprise' finalists have done bugger all (in slams) since....Here's the list:

Gonzo, 2007. Gubbed by Fed Never got beyond a QF since.
Baggy 2006. Gubbed by Fed. SF WImbly same year but never beyond R4 since.
Scheuttler 2003. Got gubbed by Agassi. Never beyond R4 since.
Johansson 2002. Beat Marat then nothing.
Clement 2001. Gubbed by Agassi. Never beyond a QF since (ex dubs)

Good luck Jo T.....looks like you'll need it  pray

Interesting bit of research there but I don't think those people have suffered for their finals appearance, it just doesn't make sense. Sure, it makes sense that shortly after they will get excited and slump for a few tournaments but to never regain those qualities probably means they just don't have what it takes to play at their best most of the time.

Its just funny that 6 of the last 8 finals have been contested by a 'surprise' player,  5 of which have gone on to absolutely nothing. The 6th, Tsonga, has never played a 5-setter in his puff and keeps pointing to his dodgy back every time he wins. The omens aren't good.

They're getting really excited over at MTF...

Tsonga sleeps with a night light. Not because Tsonga is afraid of the dark, but the dark is afraid of Tsonga.
Tsonga doesn't wear a watch. He decides what time it is.
Tsonga doesn't fear. Fear fears Tsonga.
Tsonga fought the law. And the law got bageled.
Tsonga puts the figs in Fig Rolls
Tsonga kills two stones with one bird.
Tsonga doesn't need the racquet , the racquet needs him
Tsonga doesnt look at the schedule - he decides when he will play a match.
Tsonga doesn't need a courtside clock. HE decides when the match has run its time.
Tsonga doesn't run after the ball. The ball comes to him.
