I can read French, and understand it when it's spoken to me, but I can't speak it myself. I also know some Russian and I can understand a lot of Spanish, but again, can't speak it.

I only speak English.  I have a few words of French but nothing thats useful.  I did German for two years and I can only remember one sentence and count to 12 lol

But as Dentie, as an English speaking person I don't need to learn other languages.  Although when I went abroad I did learn the basics manners.

Oddly it's not true in Latin America, where it seems to come as a genuine surprise to locals that people might not speak Spanish or Portuguese. Also amusing in Latin America is the way they translate people's names as a matter of course (eg. the news will refer to "Jorge Bush" as the US president, "Ricardo Gere" the actor and so on ...).

Well, yes. The Spanish live in their own little language world. When a foreigner tries their best Spanish on local people, with all the effort in the world, they don't have the insight to understand what they're trying to say.

It's quite remarkable how French, English and Spanish people are born with a language-handicap, couldn't pronounce anything else correctly if it killed them. Of course there are exceptions though.

Hey Marek
I thought you were Slovak? (Dobry den)
Are your parents ethnic Slovak, but Hungarian nationals? Or ethnic Hungarians, but Slovak nationals?

[I've walked across the border at Komarno and at Sturovo (after they repaired the bridge), so I know there's a lot of mixed ethnicity around that bit of the Danube].

My wife can swear in Hungarian. Smile

I live 30 km from Komarno and 50 from Sturovo

Well,we live in Slovakia of course you know it good, but this part of country was around 1000 years under hungarian domination,so mostly people speak the language and some of them use it in conversations more than slovak plus some people dont even speak slovak...
Its crazy around here, because people living in northern parts hate hungarians for the fact that before 100 years they couldnt even use their slovak language and we use that rubbish language...There are always arguments about it between politics, you know slovak national part hates hungarian part etc..

When I visit my grandparents,I take it as a trip to Hungary, because they hardly use slovak...
The best is when you go shopping and shop assistant asks you what would you like in hungarian...I absolutely hate that even when I understand it

I completely understand you, Marek, because I hate it when someone in Bulgaria speaks in Turkish - after all it's not an official language here.

As I said I love the language and it is better than our,but it is completely insane for a shop assistant to put in a word in defferent language than the official
