Andy Murray produced a disappointing and lacklustre performance as he was defeated 6-1 6-2 by Marcos Baghdatis in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters. Evidently still struggling with his fragile forehand, the Scot was unable to find a way through the Cypriot's tough and relentless groundstrokes and courtcraft.

Murray started in a bright fashion, securing the very first game of the match with an exquisite drop shot but Baghdatis showed his superior tactics and confidence as he targeted the weakened forehand of Murray and broke three times to seal the first set with ease. The second set was also straightforward for the unseeded Baghdatis, who faced no break points throughout as he wrapped up his victory in only forty-eight minutes.

With the final grand slam approaching in two weeks time, Murray will travel to the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven in an attempt to secure some victories, and gain confidence for his favourite event in the ATP calendar. Fortunately, there will be no ranking points to defend and a lower quality field will be present in New Haven as the world number 16 continues his return from his lengthy hiatus.

What was so disappointing was Andy's service -five double faults and a low first serve percentage. Whoever he plays, this must improve if he is to win at this level of tennis tournament.

There's just a lot of things that I wasn't really doing well - not moving fluidly, which is normally the one thing that I do really well.

I moved badly, so obviously wasn't hitting my forehand 100%. A combination of those two things and also playing against a great player like Marcos doesn't help.

I decided after my matches last week and then a few days before the tournament here that I was going to try to hit some more (forehands) and, I hoped, be pain free - and I haven't had any bad reactions.

It was feeling better, and I guess it's pretty much 100% now. It's a good sign.

Leaving out "according to Murray" changed your response? Eyebrow raise.

It’s not surprised me too much,

I had a knee injury when I was 16 or 17 and I was injured for six months. It took me time to get used to the movement again after that, but after a couple of months I started playing better.

The more matches I play and more I’m around the best players, I’ll start moving better.

I want to try and play better in New Haven and then get some matches under my belt before the US Open.
