World number two Rafael Nadal proved too strong for Andy Murray this evening as he defeated Murray 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the Hamburg Masters.

Andy opened promisingly a he took his opening service game to love and pushed Nadal to 15-30. However, following a controversial point in which Nadal returned a drop-shot that Andy felt was not up. Yet the umpire ruled otherwise and Murray found himself down 15-40 on his serve. Nadal took his first break point and went on to win the opening set on a second break of serve.

The second set, again, opened well for the birthday boy as Andy took advantage of a lapse of concentration from the Spaniard and took the opening break. But he failed to consolidate and, finding himself firmly on the back foot he was unable to get back into the match and Nadal again won the set with a break of serve.

It was a match of forehands and the world number two’s was too good and Murray’s failed him on a number of occasions. Another tournament ends and that elusive victory against Nadal goes begging once again.

Going by today, we at least can be hopeful of a reasonable performance at the French Open assuming he is seeded.

BBC say it all I think. Andy failed to handle Nadal's brilliance. Nadal wasn't at his best tonight but Andy was by no means outplayed. Scoreline is worse that it was. He was always right there at 30 or deuce on Nadal's serve. And his serve % was high and he was going for it. (again the serve volley thing?)

Anyway, all in all good signs.

No surprise it's a defeat but the score line should have been closer. Rolling Eyes

So more positive than negatives from this tournament then. Smile

yeah i agree, murray didn't play badly at all. 'unforced errors' are always an ambiguous term against nadal because he puts so much top spin on the ball. i think nadal served in the 80's too which made it pretty hard for andy to break.

Although to be fair the scoreline wasn't exactly the best representation of the match. Two double break straight sets is harsh considering the level of play from both sides of the net.

Although, I hate to say it but Barry Cowan got it right. It was that score cause it was clay. A lot of Murray's mid rally shots would have given him so much more on grass or the hardcourts. But in the end, regardless of surface, Nadal would still have edged it. He can't just come out aggresive against the best cause if he doesn't practice it against the not so good he won't manage it against the best. Stupid Barry being right. I maintained he was copying Petch's answer paper. Whistle

Murray is clearly not up to par with the likes of Nadal.

He got a break in the second, but I'd have said the final score wasn't too far away from the way the match played out.

Andy may have been sniping points off Rafa's service games, but almost all of his own were under pressure, so the whole match was an uphill struggle. I can't remember any periods in the match where (if you'd flicked over for a few minutes) he looked as if he might win.

It certainly wasn't a classic Andy match, but there were definitely plus points to take away.

He should reduce his unforced errors if he want to go far at Roland Garros.

Kind of agree with you but not entirely. Most of the Rallys Andy was really clever, hit great shots and was right in them. A lot of the reason he was under so much pressure on his serve was that his final forehand didn't come off. He was aggressive and in control of his serve it was just errors that meant he had problems.

And on Rafa's serve he was smart. Stepped in on a lot of serves and knew how to turn the point to his advantage. His defensive play was great too and the points he 'chipped' off of Rafa were no accident. They were tactical and skillfully won. Unfortunately he didn't take his chances, again!

Not saying the match could have gone either way, like you can say with his last two Nadal matches, but I do think it was a lot closer than it looked. And i did watch the whole thing.

Anyone who ever thought that Andy had a chance of winning this was living in cloud cuckoo land.  He actually did very well against Rafa on clay - slightly better than Moya did today!
