Andy Murray booked a third round meeting with Ivo Karlovic after a nervy 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory against Jurgen Melzer, in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters.

The Austrian came firing out of the blocks with considerable aplomb, and he raced to a 4-0 lead, as Murray was once again forced to retrieve from far behind the baseline in the early stages. However, the Scot eventually found his feet halfway through the first set, but it was too late as Melzer served out for the first set in just under forty minutes.

The British number one was clearly starting to acclimatise to the tough conditions and the change in tactics paid dividends, as Murray started to dictate play and was rewarded with several breaks of serve.

Melzer who had started the match so brightly, started to fade whilst Murray grew in confidence, and the 20 year old broke serve to seal his thirteenth victory of the year, and an intriguing encounter against big serving Karlovic.

It's quite good that Murray struggled in his first match of the tournament, that usually gives him a decent kick start for the rest.

That was the case in Metz I guess, with that really tense Wawrinka match.

Oh where would the fun be if it wasn't? lol  Nearly saw the old Murray today.  I could have sworn he was two steps away from throwing his racket on the floor.

Completely agree Mark.  I hope his serve is better than today when serving Ivo.  The big man has improved alot since San Jose last year, so it will be much harder.  If Murray serves badly, there is only one winner in this match.

Murray will probably frustrate Ivo with his awesome return of serve. I'm not sure if he actually needs a decent serve to take the match.

...it needs to be solid. He can't afford to be loosing his serve more than about once. That would be bad..

It would be great if someone had the time to check these stats but I bet Murray wins most matches where he loses the first set and loses most matches where he loses the second but not the first. lol

Bit scared for Karlovic, but if Andy's serve doesn't quit on him, he should be fine.

Yeah, Andy's good against these big servers. How's that ace count going anyway?
