Andy Murray has been knocked out of the Dubai Championships after a 7-5 6-4 defeat at the hands of Nikolay Davydenko.

The British number one was extremely passive in the first set, and allowed Davydenko to seize control and take the initiative in the rallies. However, the first set remained relatively close until the powerful Russian broke in the eleventh game and held to secure the first set.

The second set brought a change in attitude and tactics from Murray, who was flattening out his strokes and playing more aggressively which resulted in a early 3-0 lead. However, Davydenko refused to relent and the Scot's temperament reared its ugly head, as the world number five strolled through five games consecutively. Murray offered little resistance in the final game of the match, misfiring off both wings and allowing Davydenko to keep a stranglehold on the tempo and the points.

Reation from MurrayI had a lot of chances. Early in the first set I had a couple of break points, and against someone like him, once he starts to get comfortable from the baseline, he's really tough to beat.

You could do with getting a good start and I did that in the second set, but I played a bad game to lose my serve.

I wasn't so disappointed the way I was hitting the ball. I was just disappointed I didn't take the chances that I had because I had quite a few.

But I'm not terribly disappointed with the week as a whole.

I got through a really tough match against Fernando Verdasco and obviously beat the world number one so there's nothing to get too down about.

Reaction from DavydenkoI played well. If you are crazy, you can lose your match... If you are concentrated you can win every game.

Murray will head to Indian Wells next, hoping to defend the plethora of points gained this time last year.

It's not really the result that disappoints me the most but the non-existent calmness. Rolling Eyes  Nothing wrong with getting fired up but he was getting too frustrated today. He should be more patient like he was against Federer. Smile

It was like a completely different player showed up on Monday to every other match this week. If he can be like that every match, say, 18 months from now I'm happy to let him be an idiot just now. But if this is a permanent feature of his career... I'm not so sure I like it!

"I wasn't so disappointed the way I was hitting the ball. I was just disappointed I didn't take the chances that I had because I had quite a few"

Where is this boys head at.  Where was his forehand today, how many errors did we see and did he make his opponent run all over the place? No!  More or less every shot he hit went straight back to him - the majority too short.  Does he play a different match to what we see on TV or cant he admit that he was rubbish and say: I need to go back to the drawing board.

I would be more at ease if he came out and said; I was awful, too many stupid shots here and there, my head wasnt in the game.  It confuses me about what he says after the game as I then think to myself, where did he think he played well or was I watching a different match.

I actually think this is one time where Andy was already seeing himself in the finals and not concentrating on the match in hand and then let his frustration affect his game when he couldn't overcome Davydonkey the way he has been in the past few matches between them.

But on the positive side he is still the only player to have won 2 ATP titles this year and he's beaten the world no. 1 and now he gets to the US in plenty of time to get used to the courts etc. so there should be no excuses that he wasn't prepared.

its just winning this tournament would just about compensate if he played poor in IW & Miami.  There is a real danger now of dropping out the top 20 if he plays like he did his last two matches.

He likes playing in the US though so I hope the old Andy is back, Jamie will be there too so I hope they've made up by now.

I think he'll make at least the QF's in both of these. Hopefully a semi for at least one of them. He's good enough for it. I just hope he brings his A game. If he's up for it, we have no problem.

Even if he brings his B game then he should be able to defend those points ...

... no more of that Z game stuff, please. pray

Yeah, Wednesday really was somewhere around the x and below mark! Yesterday was maybe somewhere around J dropping to about m-r towards the end of the second set (although I only saw the first set so I'm going on BBC report) Starting on D and moving up to A would probably do!
