Andy Murray finally got a much deserved victory over his childhood rival, Novak Djokovic, tonight. His 6-3, 7-6 victory shot him into the fourth masters series semi final of his career.

In his post-match interview following his third round victory, Murray pointed out his need to be aggressive when he met Djokovic and this is the way he came out of the starting blocks tonight. Andy balanced patience with attack perfectly and never allowed Djokovic into a rhythm, drawing a number of unusual unforced errors from the Serb’s forehand throughout.

The match did not go entirely Andy’s way as he found himself behind and facing set point at 5-6, despite having broken twice and squandered other break opportunities. However, in the tie-break the Scot brought out his best game, racing to a 5-1 lead and closing out on his third match point.

More from Murray
Mentally that’s the biggest win of my career. To come through against him after he beat me so convincingly the last few times. To finally win against him is really satisfying.
Asked if he would be watching the following quarter final to be played following his own match, Murray replied:

I’m gonna go get some sleep. I’ve had a couple of late matches so I’m gonna let my coach watch that one. I like my sleep too much!
I’m sure no Murray fan will grudge him his sleep tonight as he will need to be well rested for his possible semi-final encounter with Nadal tomorrow evening.

The semi-final will be shown live on Sky Sports Extra tomorrow at midnight and whether his opponent is Nadal or Gasquet, this one promises to be another classic.

Was it not his pre-match interview he pointed out the need to be aggressive? lol

Just to be pedantic.

Nope,

Andy Murray says he was patient as he beat Stanislas Wawrinka to set up a Toronto Masters quarter-final against defending champion Novak Djokovic, where Murray says he must concentrate to beat the Serb.
Since when does Murray talk about tactics to beat an opponent before he even beats the opponent before that?

Not that I can ultimately prove this to you, without a screenshot, which I don't have, but I could send you the word document I typed it in, which I never touch after I post the final thing. But it always said the post match of the third round victory. You skim read too fast!

Great performance from Andy. Djokovic never got started but that's cause Andy never let him. He got a sniff in the 2nd set but Andy kept up the pressure even when his own game deserted him a bit and fully deserved a great win.

I did fiddle with it but it was just the spacing of the quotation bits in the expandables. Oh, and I had a . where i should have had a , but I didn't change any wording.

Possible extra motivation for last night's win....

Quote
The Scot had been a target for some verbal derision by Serbian spectators during the doubles with brother Jamie on Thursday night. "Get angry Andy," they yelled. "And tomorrow Djokovic is going to take care of you too." But Murray, who was once riled by spectators into achieving a memorable victory from match point down over Paul-Henri Mathieu in Miami, again revealed his stubbornness.
