Andy Murray's struggle on clay continued as he lost 6-2 7-6 to Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round of the Rome Masters.

To make matters worse, his draw opened up earlier in the day with Rafael Nadal losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5 6-1.

Murray was broken twice in the first set but rallied in the second. However, after Murray took a 4-2 second-set lead Wawrinka broke back to take the match to a tie break, which he won 7-5 to take the match.

I don't feel so bad now that I've heard that Nadal lost  too(although that's probably down to fatigue Whistle )

I hate clay, and I look forward to grass and hardcourts again, as I hope that Andy is too!

Onwards and upwards! cmon yeah

At least he tried to impose himself on the match. His forehand looked good for large periods of the match and he was dictating lots of the points. Still, made far too many errors, served terribly and often made the wrong shot selection.

I don't really know what his team are telling him with regards to those drop shots. It almost like he is playing them because he doesn't feel confident he can make proper winners.

He really needs to get himself a coach

indeed... forgetting doha, marseille and fed he hasn't really had the kind of consistency he showed last year.

murray 4-2 up last year would never have surrendered the break...

and again, where are all these drop shots coming from???

The main fault in his play at the moment and the difference between him and the top players is the inconsistency and unreliability of his serve -again.

Unusual not to serve an ace all match, caught the second set tiebreak and Andy just didn't play well on the big points.

Oh well, it's progress after all - albeit very minor. Hopefully he'll win a few in Hamburg if some of the big guns pull out and get some  ranking points so he's a top 16 seed for Wimbledon. Smile

He's actually worse now, fuzzy hasn't had a post modded in a long time, Tommy has very recently.

I think the title's a bit harsh.  The losses to Djokovic and Ancic at Miami were flops, this was a respectable loss to a player who is clearly better than him on clay.

How am I being bad or anything? Just being honest. He lost to Wawrinka. Andy knows he is better than that.

So has he retired is a fine question in my opinion considering what Andy has said.

Didn't think he was that bad yesterday to be honest. Made a couple of stupid decisions that lost him oppertunities he'd created. But he hit his forehand well and got a really good depth on most of his shots.

He struggled a little with his movement cause he was clearly bothered by his leg. His couple of breaks in the 1st set were probably down to this.

Definately could have done better but this wasn't a bad performance. Wawrinka played very well and was consistant. Drop shot doesn't bother me so much here as he actually used it well and it's not a bad tactic to adopt on clay.

All in all, despite the disappointment due to the fact it wasn't Nadal he was gonna have to play after all, I didn't think he did too bad. And he did save 6 mp's!!!

I'm beginning to suspect that perhaps tennis just isn't his game ...
