So we want Marco to beat Robredo and Nadal to beat Youzhny, and then the only thing that can go wrong (providing Andy wins of course) would be Bagdahtis winning the tournament.

Em, the last fifty years of rugby stats says otherwise.

(except a tiny handful of magnificent and memorable - or rather un-remembered - nights)

Little more from Andy on Shanghai, the match. Still totally laid back:

Q. What did he say to you at the net at the end?

ANDY: He just said, Great match, good luck for Shanghai. You know, that was that.

Q. In regards to tomorrow’s match versus either Gasquet or Blake, are you going to watch them play today or, on the contrary, are you going to try to forget about that and whoever is playing against you will play against you and that’s it?

ANDY: I mean, both of them are playing really well. It’s going to be a tough match, regardless of who it is. I’m not particularly in favor of one or the other. But, you know, I know that I need to win that match if I want to go to Shanghai. If I lose, pretty much I think the winner of the next match will probably go. There’s a very good chance, unless some of the other guys, you know, make final. There’s a good chance whoever wins it goes to Shanghai. I’m sure everybody is going to be nervous. Obviously, Blake won’t have the support that Gasquet would. But, no, I look forward to the match.

Q. If it is Gasquet, how much do you enjoy the atmosphere like today where you’re playing against very much a player who is the home favorite?

ANDY: Well, a good thing about playing in France is that they actually really understand tennis. They know when there’s been a great point. They know when you’ve hit a good shot. And they don’t like it when guys aren’t trying or are playing bad tennis, you know, throwing a racquet and stuff. They don’t really put up with that. I don’t think it makes a huge difference because they’re very knowledgeable about tennis. But I’d definitely get more support if I play Blake.

Q. If tomorrow does prove to be a bit of a winner takes all, does that excite you? What are your feelings about that? Does it make it a bit more nerve racking? How do you approach it?

ANDY: No, because it’s been like that the whole week. You know, every match I’ve needed to win. It’s not really going to be that much different. It’s not guaranteed that I’ll go to Shanghai if I win that match because there’s still guys that are in front of me that are winning. I’m going to be obviously a bit nervous tomorrow. But I played well my last six, seven matches. It’s obviously a tough match against Blake or Gasquet, but I’ve got a good chance of winning.

Q. Bearing in mind what’s at stake, how much have you been watching other matches? I’m thinking particularly yesterday with the early start, did you watch all the matches after that?

ANDY: I didn’t watch. I saw on the live scores in my room. I went to sleep after the first set of the Mahut\Blake match thinking there’s a chance that maybe he’s out and that was going to be good. But I woke up in the morning, first thing I did was check on the Internet. Blake obviously won as well. I’ve followed what’s going on on the live scores, but I haven’t hung around the center just to watch the matches.

Q. The possibility of Shanghai, when do you start getting excited about that? Is it when you’re on the plane? This round?

ANDY: I think all the players that have a chance of qualifying are excited about the chance of going. But no point in getting excited about playing there until you actually until you actually make it, I guess.

Q. Can you talk about the relative qualities of Gasquet and Blake, what their games pose for you.

ANDY: Blake plays really aggressive, moves really good. Isn’t the best return but plays really aggressive on the return. You know, if he can string three or four good returns together in a set he’s a tough guy to break. Once he gets ahead, he plays really well when he’s ahead of you. And Gasquet is a great shot maker, hits the ball really hard off both wings, volleys well. Doesn’t probably serve as well as Blake, but moves good, has a nice slice. You know, he’s an all around player. It really just depends. Gasquet’s a little bit more solid than Blake.

Q. Can you compare the sort of tension of this week with any previous tournament or is it just totally different? Does it have any comparisons with the slams, what you’ve done before?

ANDY: I’m not that tense, to be honest. I mean, playing on Centre Court at Wimbledon, you’re pretty tense going into those matches. Davis Cup is similar. But, no, I’m not that tense, to be honest. There’s a bit of nerves before you go out onto the court, but it’s not like when I’m serving for a set or serving for the match, there’s butterflies going. I’m not getting nervous towards the end of matches. Once I’ve got into my rhythm, I feel pretty good on the court.

With Tommy Haas out of the running this match just became so much more important. We just need Baghdatis to do us a favor.

I'll see if I can get him on the phone...

I hope you rang him back and told him nice one! clap Very Happy  I'll see him right next time I'm in Cyprus Wink
