Andy Murray was beaten in straight sets, 6-1 6-4, by erratic Russian Marat Safin in his opening match of the Kooyang Classic in Melbourne.

Due to the sudden withdrawal of fellow competitor David Nalbandian, the Scot was bumped up to third on court, but was unable to overcome the big-hitting Safin, as conditions were mixed up by strong winds.

In Andy's own words:

It was quite tough to judge today, because the wind was swirling a lot and there wasn't too many rallies.  He obviously hits the ball unbelievably hard and flat, so the court did feel quite quick, but I don't know if it is or not
However, it also seems that Murray was hampered by the timing of the match:

We got bumped a match forward, and I was doing some running on the track this morning, and I hadn't had my lunch too long before the match, so in some of those long rallies I felt like it was just about to all come up.

Not bothered by this loss, it's an exhibition, who cares.

If Safin beats Andy in an exhibition tournament, he might beat him at a Grand Slam too. If Andy didn't  play his best 'cos he can't gain any points, it's a mentality you never get the Nr 1 place with. Though I think Safin just had a good day.

And I think Andy was seriously screwed by the scheduling. It's not a fantastic trait but you know how long it can take Andy to get up to playing when he does know his start time. Often takes half a dozen games. But if he'd eaten a big lunch only hours beforehand and was therefore concentrating on not losing it on court I don't see how that mentally means anything at all. If Andy knows he wasn't at his best he'll disregard it and that'll be it. I don't think he was guilty of not playing his best because of what was up for grabs.

What's going on with injury though: Federer has a stomach bug, Nalbandian is probably out for the Open... this is the beginning of the season, they're supposed to be fit and rested! If it starts like that, what will it be like come Master time!

Going by his comments it certainly seems like it so I'm especially not disappointed for that reason. It's a bit unfair to suddenly push his match forward, do they do that in the ATP?

Yup, all the time. Think about it if a player retires after like 10 mins of play the next match comes on right after. Although I remember that happened before an Andy match before and we were about 40 mins before Andy came on court. Think they give the guys a little more time at the big tourney's but at this the guys will have just gone for it cause it's 'just an exhibition'.

Yeah, in Wimbledon they are given quite a bit of preparation time, probably the same for the other tournaments.

Must take a lot of concentration to stop throwing up and continue playing tennis.if Andy thinks it's a bit windy in Melbourne he should be in Scotland to-day.Serious gales and the wind is really cold. It's only a warm up event Roddick beat Federer in the final last year. Then Fed trounced him at the Aussie open. It's only the rehearsal.Has Fuzzy passed away??He's not on to spout gloom and doom.

P.S.I don't wish Nalbanan any harm, but if his injury is slow to heal and the other Argies can collapse with various ailments it gives a little chink of light for the davis Cup.
