Roger Federer has said that he believes Murray is "more talented than Djokovic" and is surprised that he didn't make the big achievements before the Serbian.

The world no-1 also defended his controversial comments against Murray by saying he only meant them as "constructive criticism" and that he now understands the English term "sour grapes".

He beat me after all. It’s unfortunate, because that’s not what I meant at all.

I’ve always thought he was one of the most talented ones of the whole group, even more talented than Djokovic to be honest. I thought he would do the most first before Djokovic, but Djokovic played really well the last year and started this year unbelievably.

Federer said he did not mention the mononucleosis until now because he did not want to detract from victories by Djokovic or Murray. But Federer was still criticized in the British news media for being uncharitable in defeat after he commented in Dubai that Murray had not changed his game in the past two years and was surprised at how defensively he was playing.

Federer, who said he has now learned the English term “sour grapes,” said he was trying only to provide “constructive criticism” and did not mean to imply that he did not respect Murray’s game.

“He beat me after all,” Federer said. “It’s unfortunate, because that’s not what I meant at all.”

He added: “I’ve always thought he was one of the most talented ones of the whole group, even more talented than Djokovic to be honest. I thought he would do the most first before Djokovic, but Djokovic played really well the last year and started this year unbelievably.”

He must have actually said that. They can't direct quote unless he says it. Although he might have only said it in reaction to the sour grapes stuff. Mind you, that bit on the end about him always saying he was more talented than Nole was right. He has said that on more than one occasion. That's actually one of the reasons I was so surprised about his reaction on Monday.

I had my tongue well and truly stuck in my cheek when I made the comment ...' if it's in the paper .....'

I have noticed that Federer gets very 'pouty' when things are not going his way and, after all, he has had it his own way for such a long time that it will be very difficult for him to 'give way' to the 'young bloods'.  Let's hope he can summon up some grace when he finds himself in more losing situations - maybe even to AM again this year.

I still think his comments were nasty and he said them because he was pissed off at losing.

I am wondering how Federer could only now have come to realise the meaning of the phrase 'sour grapes'.  With his command of the English language, is this really possible?

Mononucleosis or glandular fever is a viral infection and does not get better with antibiotics (though obviously any extra bacterial infections would be helped) It can have a long, long drain on energy - easily six months or even longer!

My daughter was off school for 3 months with it...so it maybe Fed's tennis

has not become quite as vulnerable as we have been thinking.

Djokovic wasn't out for 3 months last year which is the reason he's so far ahead of Andy at the minute, it would have been alot closer but for that fact.

I dont think thats the case.  Who's to say he wouldnt have fallen at the first hurdle like hes done already this season.  His consistency lets him down on so many occasions.  If it was the Murray against Nadal matches and in Madrid (Chela), then I can honestly say it is Murray who would be in Djokovic's place right now.  But he just waits for errors in opponents to win matches more than hitting winners to win matches.  With his ability, all the shots he has and the power he can get of both wings, its a shame to see him play the majority of his matches in that passive style. He is one of the best defenders on tour, no question. What he needs to do is turn that into attack and win the points - not just keep playing defence all the time.

Just curious... does anyone remember what sort of tennis he played against Nalbandian at Wimby, was it passive or agressive?
