Murray loss is only minor setback « on: January 15, 2008, 02:04:05 PM »

Andy Murray's first round defeat at the Australian Open is only a "minor hiccup" according to Tim Henman, but he also insists that Murray must learn from it.

Andy will be as disappointed as anyone but he's playing great tennis.

He's had an extremely minor hiccup in losing a match like that. But the biggest thing is he learns from that.

When you step on the court, rankings, reputations and all those things go out the window.

Henman continues...
He's done fantastically well to be nine in the world and have the results that he has.

The exciting things is that he is going to learn even more.

Andy has got so many options to his game and he is learning which is the best one to use," said the former world number four.

The more pro-active he is in his game the better he becomes.

If he's a little bit reactive playing someone like Tsonga, who hits the ball so heavy and can really do some damage, it's difficult because the guys are so good these days.

The 20-year-old now has a large gap in his schedule as he prepares for the Davis Cup tie against Argentina which starts on the 8th of February.

I suppose it is a good thing he gets to prepare for the Davis Cup tie.

All due respect to the tiger, but you have to think that Henman is really not the person Andy wants to be hearing this from ...

(with that thinking, Andy might achieve as much as Tim did - ie.  not quite make it)

Why not? Tim was the best british tennis player for years. He also said that Andy could indeed go further than him and was at a better place at a similar age. So I disagree.

Murray, please get rid of the yes-men.

I agree with measdale, Tim was the person who never fully made it. A Slam finals appearance would have been something, at least Murray will get that.

Remember, Tim also was a bit of a choker under pressure where Murray usually can cope with it well.

My point was really that Tim has a decade of getting used to disappointment and finding reasons for it, reasons which don't normally mean or help much.

The fact that he was the best british tennis player for years doesn't actually mean anything - I mean, the best Japanese Grand Prix drivers are never really at the top of their sport. old

I think "usually" should perhaps be "sometimes" at the moment ... Very Happy
(as the song almost has it, he ain't never gonna be predictable) lmao

Murray used to cope with it well, now I'm not so sure of his ability to keep cool.

I agree with you Mark - re Murray's inability to keep cool - it will be interesting to see if he ever makes a slam final - until he changes his style of play, I think his chances are slim.

Safin and Gonzo are both total hotheads and have made slam finals. The style of play needs to be more aggressive tho'. Andy said so himself that when he was more aggressive he won sets easier.

BTW, welcome to MW thomas!  welcome
