Andy Murray has been punished by the ATP for his late withdrawal from Indianapolis last week, Murray has been forced to count 0 points from the tournament instead of his 5th best optional.

The punishment will apply for the next 12 months, effectively losing him 75 points, and given that he gains a greater proportion of his total points from optional events than most, this is likely to be a major blow for the Scot.

The 21-year-old withdrew from Indianapolis for the purpose of "recharging his batteries", the ATP did not consider that a valid reason.

Apparently the ATP only implement that punishment for a 2nd offence.....

When has he done it before? Also, do you have a link to some article about this, besides the actual  rankings sheet on the ATP site?

I suspect it is New Haven last year.  Think He pulled out, the Wednesday before the draw, after he was given a wildcard.

I doubt that would count. Its probably only if you withdraw when you were on the entry list when you get penalised. I actually think you don't need twice to get punished - once i was looking around on the net about late withdrawals, and read about cases where its happened, and I never saw anything about it being only for second offence.

Does Murray deserve the punishment? What are his grounds for appeal?

He wasn't injured and he certainly wouldn't have been tired.

From memory, I think most players who have been penalised have appealed, some successful, some not. Don't ask me who, because I don't remember the details. lol

"reason" would be better than "excuse" on the front page.

"excuse" kinda implies that we, like the ATP, think it's just a pretext.
