Dear gawd, Jonny Mac had charm??? He was universally panned and hated when he was Andy's age. It was only as an elder statesman that he metamorphosed ( in the eyes of the media) to being a "character".
He was the first champion at Wimbledon not to be given automatic membership of the place and the general concensus at the time was that he should be kicked out of tennis altogether. He just might have been if he hadn't been so talented.
Dont you just love it when journos rewrite history.
And very telling that Borg, perceived as the perfect gentleman could be a complete bast**d and certainly screwed his life up after tennis. Jonny Mac, however, is pretty well loved by his peers (
excpt Connors of course...that hatred was real) and is a doting dad and husband. Something Borg never managed.
Treat it as fish and chip paper, even if it is The Gruniard.
